Woodworking Design Dilemma Paint

Staining White Oak Ceiling

We are installing white oak tongue and groove on a vaulted ceiling. We like the color of the raw white oak but want to put something on it to protect it and hopefully keep it from changing colors. Anyone have advice on what products to use? Stain vs sealers or do we need both? etc. Hoping we can use one coat of one product.

I'm surprised no one answered this so I'm giving you a bump. I certainly don't have any valid advice to offer other than test, test, test before you make a decision.

Anything you put on it will change color - even if only slightly. As it ages it will change color. Even a supposedly non-yellowing poly finish will yellow/darken it a teench but of course not so much as anything thats oil based.. You could experiment with some kind of custom mix translucent stain using white/gray pigments to keep it lighter/ not so yellow ... as above poster indicates test samples are essential!!!! Or just embrace a natural look with flat finish only that will age over time... white oak is an expensive, beautiful wood, so why not design room with it in its full natural glory? What does your finisher think?
