I don't care for shag in eating areas. If you want a rug there put one with color.

No rug or shag rug. I would go for a vinyl floor cloth which you can easily sweep up and wash. Spicher and company has all the styles.

A rug that has the same colors as your art would really refresh the spot.🙂

The rug is ok - there are other options that have some pattern or texture that could be considered. Your heavy black chairs seem more tired to me. Something more open backed would lighten things up - like a black wishbone or Windsor chair. Just a thought! I love your large window over the sink!

You need more of a chandelier type light fixture that hangs lower. You can put the current one in the hallway.

I would change the lighting to something like a small drop pendant light and maybe a jute rug.

I don't see the point of a rug/mat under a kitchen table ,, think of the mess of dropped food or spilled drinks ..easier to clean the floor with out one .

No to the rug. (Unless you have a dog who can Hoover it for you!) There are other kinds of rugs that would be better in a kitchen but if your main goal of the rug is to give the area a refresh, I think that goal can be better accomplished in other ways.

How many people live in your home and regularly use this table? Is it the only eating area in your home? The chairs seem very weighted and heavy for a kitchen, and the one seems trapped against the wall. Is this a space where you could have 2 chairs that are lighter and more open?

I'd get a plant with broader leaves and a tad bit more color to uplift that corner space.

I would suggest a square rug, it will match the shape of your chairs better and one with complimentary colors to the art. A low pile. It will be easier to clean. I also agree with the comments about a lower hanging light fixture. Something with a natural feel (brown or gold) to help soften the look and not distract from the overall image.

1. Eliminate the shag rug and don't replace it with anything

2. Select larger wall art and center it on the wall

3. Find a new more interesting light fixture for over the table. Make sure the style is one you and see through that is not too heavy over the table.

4. Turn the table and chairs on the diagonal so it fits the space better

5. If funds permit select a replacement dining chair that is a bit lighter in scale. This side of the room looks so very heavy.

Chilewich makes some fun vinyl floor cloths when they get dirty you hose them off . I would never use a shag anythere where food could be spilled .A new light and the art hung nmuch lower and I agree less formal looking chairs in fact maybe even colored ones .I assume this is not your DR so have a bit of fun.

Lights dated and I’m seeing that more. Original decision choice has been to keep view uninterrupted.

And yes - red carpet on way out - waiting arrival of new sectional (neutral color). All main living areas open n visually connected.

YES!!

Chairs are much better and highly recommend reupholstering (and increase padding); I’d do dining room’s chairs as well and having done many over the years, seats are really easy and inexpensive to do (lots of on line info).

Coordination is important, so consider the big picture and how you want the entire space to feel.

Could add a simple, washable style rug that doesn’t compete with dining room’s rug.

Add a large piece of art (vs your 3) and suggest the same shades.

Lighting will have a major impact; look for a simple/light/modern design. Duplicate the style, but choose different sizes/shapes to best suit the tables.

I would NOT recommend reupholstering. Those Parson's style chairs scream 'we're from the 90s" 'and the scale of them is too thick for your kitchen. Besides, for the cost of reupholstering, you can purchase completely new chairs and maybe even save some money buying new ones.

Looks so much better without the area rug

Ruggables.com has so many pretty, low pile, washable rugs. I think the floor looks “naked” without something to anchor the table and chairs. Your choice, of course.

It is inexpensive to pop out those seats and reupholster them with a staple gun. The cost of a couple,of yards of fabric is cheaper than new chairs. If you like the new chair ideas Beverly posted, then go for it, but for the interim, new fabric is not expensive.

All of these rugs come in other sizes and colors.

Looked for broad leaf tall plant that wasn’t too big. Nothing. Noted then that several renderings removed plant — - done. Clean but not too sterile. Will be looking for art and maybe low texture rug (rug is still on the line). Will also plan on reupholstering chair seats in DR and kitchen (DYI🥰).
