When they get more sun, Aloes react by getting more colourful. You'll also notice that the lower leaves are dying, IINW. That's because the plant's shedding them as it grows new ones.

Your soil could stand some improvement in its drainage capacity, but that's not such a big deal.; it's just that the plants will grow faster with some help there.

I would guess too much sun and heat. In my experience, Aloes look better if not exposed to direct sunlight. I keep mine indoors, in bright indirect light. Mine are planted in a fast-draining gritty mix and I water them lightly every couple of weeks.

It's good to know they are not dying then! That was my primary concern as right now I don't have anywhere else to put them except outside on our balcony.

I will maybe have to think about my future plans for them though as I was going to buy a rack to wheel them in and out of my utility room/garden for Winter and Summer. However my future garden is south facing and is in direct sunlight all day... the balcony they are on at the moment is under an overhang and gets hardly any direct sunlight, so I would imagine my plan for the future would be worse for the aloe vera...

Aloe veras can take a lot of sun they just change color to grayer and the leaves are more upright. I‘ve seen them planted in western facing positions here in the desert although ours are in shade after about 1:00. The splayed leaves look like they were kept in low light but maybe they are transitioning now that you've moved them. They are tough plants and are probably just adjusting to a new position.

Color will be richer green with more shade, YES, they can take direct sun, but the coloration will change, and in shade, revert back. No big deal.
