They will live in pots forever...like a lot of geophytes with a decent storage organ. I have some which have been in the same pots for over a decade! Without a single attempt to topdress or repot. I wouldn't ever bother growing them in the ground because it is so easy to shuffle them around, poking them in the border for flowering, then stashing them in a corner for the months and months when they are just leaves. Seems possible to stay on top of lily beetle too if you are vigilant. I think our harsh winter saw off all the overwintering larval stages because I have not seen a single red pest.

And this is why I enjoy planting perennials in containers....the flexibility that you describe is so good.
