Update:

I let the machine cool down for a few minutes after it stopped draining. I turned on the machine and forwarded it to the spin cycle on Regular. More water drained out for a few moments and then it just stopped draining again. And the burning smell came back. So I stopped it and unplugged the machine.

Likely a pump problem. Overheating, shutting off on thermal protection until it cools. Possibly due to leaking, examine the pump for evidence such as rusting and/or mineral deposits on the windings. Hopefully you have the retrofit pump fuse kit installed in the console to protect the board from damage ... but either way, don't run the machine again until the problem is solved.

ETA: The serial number is coded for year and month of production.

I didn’t see any evidence of leaking under the washer.

I’m thinking it may be time to replace this washer. It’s 17 years old. I’ve gotten a good run out of it.

What do you suggest for a new washers?

I’ve loved this GWL11. Is there anything on the market like it?

Not sure if I want a front loader.

We’ve never had one.

The pump can be tested via diagnostic mode. Machine off, press/hold Temp Down, then press Power at the same time, release both buttons when Diagnostic mode activates. Press the Regular cycle button to toggle the pump on (or off). Check if it runs 5+ mins without shutting off. Press Power to exit diagnostics. The pump runs on 120v. It also can be bench-tested by removing it from the machine and attaching a test cord to the terminals.

Speed Queen is OK. Be aware there are two different mechanical/wash action designs. The TR series is an agi-tub mechanism with the agitator secured to the spin basket, the whole assembly oscillates (more than 360° rotation) to slosh the water through the clothes moreso than the clothes through the water, although there is some slow reverse rollover. The TC model is a traditional transmission/agitator design but with no water level control, all cycles have a fixed normal fill level of approx 1/2 to 2/3 full depending on the cycle, and a deep wash option that fills 3 to 4.5 gallons more.

Doing some research now on new washers.

My local dealer (where I originally purchased my Fisher and Paykel washer/dryer set) recommends the Speed Queen washers. He did say the TR is harder on clothing.

If we went the front loader route:

You may have misunderstood the store rep. SQ TR series 3, 5, and 7 (aka Perfect Wash) are gentler. The TC5 model (aka Classic Clean) is more aggressive & marketed at farmers, mechanics & the like.

I would choose a frontloader if I needed to buy a new washing machine.

LG front loaders are at the top of their game right now (they have been for a few years).

Avoid Samsung like the plague (sorry but just hear and read too many complaints).

If it matters, the only two machines that have reversible washer doors are Electrolux and GE.

Hmmm….having a tough time deciding on a new washing machine.

Which machine is closest to the GWL11?

High speed spin, efficient water usage, top loader.

Seems like most of the top loaders nowadays have long cycles and use a lot of water, especially compared to the GWL11.

I think we read the GE PTW705 top loader takes over 100 minutes for a wash cycle? Is that right?

Plus, the clothes won’t be as dry coming out of the washer because of slower spin speeds, which means longer time in the dryer, and higher electric bill.

Maybe we should go with a front loader?

My local dealer doesn’t sell LG.

Reversible door not a concern.

My choice for a frontloader would be a Maytag or Whirlpool, whichever model of either has features/options per my wants. Maybe an LG as alternate.

Your GWL11 spins at 1,010 RPM. There may be a few current toploaders that can do 900 to 1,000 but I don't know any specifics, check the feature listing/specifications on models of consideration. Most of the models I've noticed in passing are 700 to 850.

We decided on the GE Profile PTW705 top loader, based on the recommendations of my local dealer.

It spins fast (almost as fast as the GWL11).

But the cycle times are a bit long apparently.

Local dealer talked me out of a front loader. He said they are more expensive to repair than top loaders.

Fingers crossed it lasts as long as my GWL11!!

@mrmichaeljmoore I am in a similar predicament with my Fisher & Paykel. I wish I could just buy another F&P top loader. How is it going with the GE model?
