Post the pic in jpeg format so we can enlarge it btter yet take a pic of the hood so we can see exactly what you are needing. I ahree 48" is overkill but I aslo dislike raised bars so what are you planning for the whole spce or is it just the hood. Post all pics and anything to do with this post here in commnets DO NOt start another post.

I like to tell people to wait 6-12 months before making any kitchen changes. Making piecemeal changes without a long term plan is rarely a good idea. If the hood isn’t broken, just live with the kitchen and think about what you do and don’t like and want to change. For example, you probably want new countertops. You may want to change the layout of the whole kitchen. You may want new flooring, etc.

If you’re anxious to make the fix, get a good cabinetmaker to work with. The whole upper cabinet row there likely needs to come down and repositioned with fillers to accommodate the smaller stove vent you get.

STOP right now and IMO live there for a min of 3 months to even think about changing the range .The kitchen I think needs major work but you need to see how the layout functions for you and that can only be figured out by living with what you have,BTW that is a horrible spot for any cooking appliance .

I was hoping to live with what is there, except update the appliances. my husband has a health issue and I have to focus on him. i just want to make the place livable while here.

The kitchen does look liveable for now. Please try and live with it for 6 months while you get to know what works and doesn't work. Hopefully you'll then be able to figure out what new appliances would work best for you etc.

That kitchen is about 30-40 years old and depending on how old you are, may or may not be very functiional for you. However you really won't know until you've been there for a while.

If the stove is not working, then you need to go appliance /range hood shopping. If you can wait, then the advice you’ve been getting is valid.

New houses are hard to learn which is why most Houzzers will advise you to “sit with” your ideas for a few months.

Shopping on the internet for potential new appliances is not a bad idea. But if you can wait, don’t buy anything.

I think you have to determine what benefit you would get by shrinking the hood by 6-12". I can't imagine the benefit would be worth the expense of redoing cabinetry. I don't think basic hoods like this come in 48" commonly. If you need to replace it, or want stainless, you could put in a 42" and have a 3" gap on each side. You don't want to reduce to a 30" over a 30" range, even though people do that. You want a 3" in addition on each side.

My fix would be to get a larger range/remove the lower small cabinet to the left and the filler piece on the right. BOOM DONE! I have a saws all that could get that done in an hour.

I would not recommend placing a wider range next to a vertical wood cabinet such as there is on the left.

Range placement is not ideal, but don’t reduce the amount of countertop space around it! You need landing space around a range - at least 12” on one side and 15” on the other side of a range. The current range placement is one reason I would consider an overhaul in that kitchen and why I wouldn’t replace the hood right away but just wait until I could reconfigure.
