Try to figure out if the shelves are fastened to the wall, since if they are, it might be possible to remove & replace the cabinets with some ready-made one of the same size (or close enough to work).

My go-to for deodorizing from urine is hydrogen peroxide - spray or pour it on, let the fizz die down, repeat until no more fizzing occurs. However, I doubt that it can work through paint.

I'd want to remove them and get the cause of the odor. Could still be mice excrement & carcasses behind that wood.

Did you paint with Kilz? I had a fiberglass shower removed from my bathroom and mice had made their way into the insulation (luckily none got in the house). There was stink remaining in the surrounding wood. The contractor cleaned the area then painted it with Kilz. It took a couple of coats, but was eventually odor free. If you can do that, I would paint the doors and replace the dark hardware, if you want to keep them.

I removed the shelves and the bottom most shelf had space between the floor. It had lot of rat poop and urine which we cleaned. Then I painted the inside of one of the cabinets and the shelves and put them back to see if the paint would have resolved some of the smell but I didnt find much difference. I had used a paint which contains primer as well and gave 2 coats min.

I am almost tempted to take the bottom cabinets off entirely but am worried the top cabinets might be connected and might lose some stability.

Taking out those cabinets would allow you to add electrical there too, so your TV cords don't have to hang across the room.

By looking at the entire wall, does it look like the top shelves rely on the bottom for support? That is my fear because the shelves above are ok. I am open to the idea of getting those bottom shelves gone.

I have not used kilz I used glidden paint which is primer and paint mixed together for the right most cabinet below and that helped but not as much as kilz would and then the paint.

Remove it. Any chance the uppers are in decent shape hang them on the wall in the garage or basement. For less money than replacing all the bottom cabinets, you can design something on your own.

I agree. Rip it out and start over. Not only will it be to your specific taste but it will be clean. Which it won't be if you just try to clean parts of it. And it will probably cost less to start anew.

We just pulled something very similar out and the hardwood floors under it were not finished. We are refinishing the floors anyway so it did not matter, but it is something for you to consider.

the smell is from the urine. it absorbs into the wood. no way to get rid of it. Rip it all out, seal all the holes and start over. nothing worth saving anyway since those are cheaply made plywood. plus, you don't want exposed hinges.

And please, for the love of jesus, do the electrical in the back wall to hide that mess of cords.

(I'm also going to ask to upgrade your outlets to carry all that power. if you're on a 20amp breaker, that could easily heat up and blow. Get an electrician out there if you have to.

Can you guys DIY? there are a hundred diff options you could do that wouldn't cost a lot and would look very nice in that spot.

you could do a BillyBookcase (Ikea Hack) that would look a million times better and won't cost a lot. all you need are some simple DIY skills.

These are simple unpainted base oak cabs, painted, topped w/wood or leftover quartz, trimmed out at botoom, top shelving and crown. (tv is too small) this isn't difficult to do either

the hard wood floors are finished and unused underneath, I am seriously leaning towards removing it now reading all the comments and ideas about how to keep it simple once we do that.

BIN pigmented shellac in the red & white can is the tried and true product for sealing odors. 'Kilz'--there are a variety of Kilz versions which range from being moderately effective to useless for sealing odor.

To be effective, all sides of all surfaces need to be coated. Two coats is preferred.

ETA: You can also use Bullseye shellac, either the clear or amber versions, to seal odors where you wish to have a clear natural wood finish vs having a painted finish.

Shellac is a great all purpose primer for interior finishes. It dries fast and sands easily to a powder with no clogging of the sandpaper. Can be tocoated with virtually any other finish you desire. Clean up equipment with denatured alcohol or household ammonia.

Take the whole thing out. Without that massive piece (which includes those bookcases) the room will look much larger. You can then plan what you want on that wall.

Do you have an Ikea reasonably close to you? They have flexible wall/cabinet systems that you might like, at reasonable cost. Look at their website to see the options.

I agree, to take it all out. There could be mouse urine, and who knows what else, underneath the cabinet too. Best to get it all out of there, and replace it. You may have to deal with urine stained floor under it too, to get rid of the smell.
