Replace Kohler Steam Shower?

We are replacing our shower completely. The shower is gutted to the studs and has been for almost a year (very slow remodel!!). The shower was a steam shower and we have a Kohler K-5529 mounted above our shower. It was installed in 2018. The shower was a natural stone (probably not the best for steam) and we are replacing it with porcelain. We haven’t had any issues with the steam generator. But … the remodel project is a big deal and we are wondering if it’s worth replacing the unit since we will be re-plumbing and re-doing everything else? Or … do we save money and keep what we have? We are a little worried about calcification since the unit hasn’t been used in a year. Our plumber really likes Mr. Steam. If we replace the unit - any recommendations on brand?

Well, yours isnt all that old. Replacing ours was a no brainer because it was over 20 years old(but still working fine) we had a thermasol and got another one because we had such good luck with the first one

Keep the Kohler steam unit. Our Kohler unit is 16 years old and we have had zero issues. The units are so simple (water tank, float valve, heating element, why spend good money on something that is still working fine? Steam units & water heaters only calcify when they are heating, above 120F CaCO3 will precipitate out of the water. Standing idle, no problem. Just be sure to periodically flush the unit via the unit drain to wash out any deposits that do accumulate. Ours is plumbed with a 1/4 turn ball valve located in the basement that I open periodically to flush it.
