I like the FP as it is but man that TV is way too high unless you all lat down to watch.

Agree with @cat_ky - i think it looks nice as is, it just needs to be “finished” with art and thougtful accessories (and no cords)

I wondered why there was a nice entertainment stand there, and the tv a mile above it on the wall, when it should have been down on the entertainment stand.

Teamed with the right area rug and furnishings, that could be a very liveable room. I wouldn't do anything to the fireplace. I'd probably install plantation shutters on the windows.

Beverly that is former homeowners TV, they are going to lower it. I'm wondering what is an "English basement family room"? Just curious.

It’s not a full basement, so my understanding is that’s called an English basement. The room is a family room. :)

We might suggest leaving the fireplace as is, but maybe try cleaning it and replacing the mantle with a wood tone. Perhaps look at lowering the TV and placing over a console like you see in our design included here:
