Accessorizing Tiny Bathroom

Hi!

This new bathroom in my basement - still under construction - is 9' x 3.5'.

Need advice - although it sounds so trivial - about what kind and where, to place towel/robe hooks/bar.

Door opens to the sink.

On one end of the 9', is the toilet. Going to place a shelf or two on the wall above the toilet.

On the other end, the shower. Still under construction.

The medicine cabinet is a surface mount, it's 5" off the wall.

There are just a few inches between the shower-curtain-to-be and the medicine cabinet.

(Pics are posting so large, sorry. Don't know how to decrease the sizes)

Was planning to place this toilet paper holder beneath the outlet next to the toilet:

Trying to figure out where to place the pieces for towels/robe in this small room. I can utilize the door either for a towel bar --- or hooks (for which 'll have a horizontal piece added on the door on which to place the hooks). Which do u think?

Below are the pieces I'm considering, just don't know where to put what and still keep a good aesthetic.

I feel like the medicine cabinet should have something on either side (nope, can't do lighting) - if I put a hook on either side, don't think I can put them on the same level because one is for a hand towel and the other is for a robe.

Would love to hear your suggestions!

I'd put hooks on back of door- 2 - for towels and/or robes. Can you but a toilet paper holder/storage combo on the floor next to the toilet and a basket on top of toilet to hold extra stuff? I agree that the walls look too nice to drill into now! Wood/basket would warm up the space (maybe matching shelf/basket under the sink for extra storage; or a stool). Is there an adhesive towel bar you can attach to the side of the sink for a hand towel?

Put things where you will instinctively reach for them when you need them. That includes the toilet brush and a plunger, which should both be close to the toilet. You can get nice looking ones these days. You might try Command hooks for at least a little while, to help you be sure of placement. Once you’re sure of placement, you can get more permanent fixtures installed. They won’t ruin the walls; they will make your bathroom look complete and easy to use for its purpose.

Sorry to sound so didactic! Of course, these are really only suggestions. I hope they help.

Never, ever “display” a plunger in a bathroom!!!!

what do you think about one or two wood shelves on the wall above the toilet tank? or white shelves? one? or two? or none?

@coray, I certainly don’t display mine. I just keep it handy - and visible! 😊

The back of the door for the towel hooks. I like your idea for where to place the tp holder.

    thanks again!

what do you think about one or two wood - or white? - shelves on the wall above the toilet tank? one? or two? or none?

Sorry, Amy, that’s a hard ”no” for me….not even in my own bathroom.

Your walls and floor tile are gorgeous. I'm in the camp that thinks that small bathrooms don't need decorative items, IMO it often looks like clutter. Your towels will add color and texture. Your lighting is another way you can decorate the space without adding clutter. Do you have a hanging fixture picked out?

    thanks, deegw.

what color(s) would u suggest for towels and the shower curtain?

@coray Where else beside a bathroom are we supposed to keep a toilet brush? It doesn't have any use outside of the bathroom.

Any color suggestions for towels and shower curtain?

I'd layer texture and use a cream/white linen look or textured curtain and cream/white towels. Something that works with the lightest color of your tile and your white fixtures. Add some bling to the room with your light fixture.

Thanks! The only lighting fixtures are the 3” spots.

    How else to add bling?

    @coray, to each his own!

For towels, you can add color, or you can do what I would probably do - use a white towel with a single color stripe.

And I believe it is possible to hide a toilet cleaning brush behind the bowl. Not in a guest bathroom, but my own.

Helene, we’re not talking about a toilet brush (which can be concealed in a nice container), but a plunger. I have only been a guest in ONE home that had a plunger in a guest bathroom…gross. Sorry, not sorry!

Red Ryder: no one was questioning the brush, just the plunger.

In a bath that size ….shelves above the toilet will be invaluable..just keeping in mind that the not so pretty things can be put in pretty containers..in our smaller bath we used the decorative holder for the toilet brush …to hold the toilet roll

thank you! do you think the shelves need a rail? can't decide.

In your case I would use wooden shelves..since all the other surfaces are hard..(and slippery)…and an accidental fall on glass shelves could be disastrous..a rail doesn’t seem needed in such a recessed spot

The depth of the shelves should not exceed the depth of the toilet tank…

For the same reasons I would not use any hooks that project out..only ones that lay flat when not in use…also any way to add a little wood trim to the mirror would have a nice softening effect

If you like a more organic feel the wood features could be natural unpainted wood…using wicker trash can and small baskets for the things stored on the shelves…

thanks. aw, too late for wood trim on medicine cabinet, it's already installed. so i'll do wood shelves above the toilet tank. wondering where else i could add wood...Maybe a wood basket, as suggested somewhere in this thread, under the sink...About the wood shelf, think it needs a rail to protect something from falling off the shelf? such as, a glass with essence oil...or anything else breakable...

thanks! another question, someone suggested i hang the hand towel from the side of the sink. It'll hang low and imo won't look great, also not so practical for use. what do u think about just one hook next to the sink for a hand towel?

The medicine cabinet could be surrounded with a box frame ..maybe even a little deeper than the mirror depth…the bathroom is so small i think hook on the door is easily accessed when using the sink …as to a little more texture a shower curtain in an woven texture…even cotton ..would add a lot..

Oh..keep forgetting paint the air exchange to match the stone…

    BklynBrownstone thanked btydrvn

thanks. cream color/natural or grey/silver shower curtain?

btydrvn, thanks for the sugg to paint the air exchange to match the stone.

Another aesthetic to add color…pale aqua paint the ceilings think I would go with white to match the fixtures..as well as white towels

White towels …white shower curtains…pale aqua ceiling

The aqua mimics a pale sky..adding another psychological enlargement to the space

@coray, my plunger is also nicely contained. They even make sets of brushes and plungers in nice matching containers now. I'm not saying you should change your personal aesthetic. But not everyone is as grossed out by simple practical considerations as you seem to be. I'd much prefer to see a plunger in my host's guest bathroom than have to yell for help in case of an incipient flood. In those situations, seconds count!

Such a nice feel to that bath! could be fun to have sleek jars for your hand soap and shower liquids (soap, shampoo etc) - we just got a set of refillable jars from Polished Jar and they give a clean look in a smaller bath, just an idea

Thanks, la_la Girl - nice suggestion! Glass? I'm afraid of glass jars...

Squatty potty, makes a toilet brush holder that conceals the brush behind the toilet. Www.squattypotty.com

They have glass options and a heavy duty plastic that feels really solid - you can customize size, material, pump style etc
