I really like the Cal Faucet Zero Drain. I used them in all the bathroom sinks in my previous house and current house.

I hated the ones with the lift rod, because I was taught how to change them by my father and hated doing it over the years. Love the Zero Drain. Just be aware that in a rarely used sink they may bind up, so might need to be lubricated once per year. There is a small screw you can loosen to adjust it. No, not more likely to clog, as they are easy to lift up and clean out.

I wouldn't say they are better or worse than the old style, just different. Also be aware that not all faucets can be ordered without the lever. The last ones I used were Brizo and my plumber just glued/siliconed the lever in place.
