I think it would probably look better with a piece of oak in the middle as long as the stain color and grain match are good. If you're happy with the oak you used in the top, I would do the same for the middle.

I agree with the above. A piece of oak in the middle will make it look like a more complete unit.

Yes, add an oak backing.

Add backing, and paint the entire unit white. You are clearly favoring a bit of coastal flavor ?. I'd paint it. The whole thing. If the top portion comes off? I might even remove it use the bottom cabinet only......hang a generous piece of coastal art and a lamp. More updated: ) Fresher and definitely more coastal in feeling!

Never paint oak. It doesn't look right. The fact that you have the piece, and it's full means you are going against the modern and you enjoy it. Stick to your style it fills that space beautifully. Adding oak will make it heavier looking. I would keep it light.

I think the oak looks nice with the table, paint color, rug, and floors. The door style, leaded glass, and wavy trim are never going to look "modern cottage style", whatever that is.

Correct in that it won't be "modern". That's why I suggested removing the top portion altogether.

It wouldn't be heresy, if you're not madly in love with a piece that certainly well served a past time. .......or don't need the collectible storage, or perhaps can't see past what it is there in this moment.
