The Second Flush - Stem Length

On the second flush, on some of my shrubs, I find that the stem length is for the most part (short length growth). Talking maybe 4-6 inches and then a bud.

Others, second flush still sends up a nice thick longish healthy stem....

So riddle me this, is just cultivar specific, in addition to whether it likes the summer heat or not >

All of them are will irrigiate so H20 doesn't appear to be the issue.

All of the are well fed, so lack of fertz is not the case.

I just deaded alot of the 2nd flush. Some I cut back into the 1st flush just to get into nice thick healty wood.

On the 3rd flush (wishful thinking), I would like to encourage longer thicker stems.

Or it's just simply Mother Nature and whatever the course is headed that I cannot control
