Gas log vs. gas insert

We're designing our fireplace area and trying to decide between doing a gas log versus a gas insert for the fireplace - we live in the Seattle area, so would love to have a warm area to sit by, and not just having a visual of a fireplace.

There will be a gas line and electricity to the fireplace. We know that a gas insert is more expensive, and we were quoted $3500 for a Lopi Radiand Plus insert (including installation and tubes in the chimney). I guess the main question is, do gas log actually provide heat for the room?

I was wondering if anyone has some experience with either, to help us decide.

Thanks!
