Shower Design Layout

Greetings everyone,

I'm seeking suggestions on how to design the shower layout for my bathroom. The area that lacks flooring used to house a jetted tub with a tiled step. Electricity is available near the fire hydrant, and the drain and faucets are on the left side, emerging from the floor. The challenge I'm facing is the ductwork above the potential shower location.

My initial idea was to have a double shower to make use of the spacious area, but I'd love to hear your opinions and ideas on this. Also, any suggestions for the use of the electrical that was previously used to power the motor for the jetted tub? I was thinking a steam shower.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A 20K steam shower doesnt look like it would fit that bath. Just plan to remove the electrical. Hire a good kitchen and bath designer.

$20k for a steam generator? No way! You can easily find one for about a thousand bucks. I plan to handle most of the work myself because contractors charge way too much, and I have a tendency to go all out on everything. DIY mode, activate! 💪😄

You are not understanding the HUGE differences in construction between a standard shower and a steam shower. The entire space has to be built differently, and vapor tight with vapor tight fixtures, etc. That is a big step above waterproofing, and most cannot even get waterproofing done correctly. If not built correctly, the steam migrates into your ceiling and walls and condenses back into water. Guess what that does to your house?

Pride goeth before a fall. The arrogance of ignorance will lead to a very expensive consequence.

Buy a TCNA manual and read it until you understand it.

Okay, so no steam shower then. I’m just looking for suggestions.

Hi Stephen, it looks like you have a fun project there. I’ve done steam showers before and I do agree with some of the other people hear it needs to be set up properly. That being said, you can certainly do anything that your heart desires although there really needs to be a few changes. As far as a steam generator, that could actually be placed in the sink cabinet, or ideally in another room entirely (basement or something like that ). Either way the electrical that was under the tub needs to be removed. If you don’t do the steam generator then I’m sure that electrical circuit could be moved/used elsewhere in the house.
As far as the air/heat ducting above, I’m sure it could be rerouted in the attic to come out somewhere else perhaps above the sink. i’m not sure if there is an attic/roof above this bathroom, but if so, you could always put in an operable skylight to ventilate the steam. A lot depends on budget, if it’s properly waterproofed and ideally tile on the ceiling, then you should be OK.
I guess it all comes down to budget and what’s happening up in the ceiling.
I hope this helps in some way :-)Darren
