Disappointing End Disappointing Season

last modified: 3 years ago

Moisture here in June and July lagged, which along with other factors, produced a disappointing later season. (No substantial rain in forecast, so will probably end the season with watering, as it began.) That actually is not unusual for the later season, though. The previous two years were unusual with adequate moisture. This year, the problems of low bud count and shorter height, along with later drab coloration, have persisted. Many of these bloomed about 10 days ago.

Rhinestone Cowboy

White Icon --good performance, but bud count down

Soft Play -- terrific substance

Edge of Irrelevance

Sons of Thunder

Kingdom Bound --difficult to capture in sun

She's Like a Rainbow

Cupid

Come By Faith

Boldly Going

Diana's Evening Gown had better height.

Partygirl Panties

Purple Lives Matter

Tahiti Sweetie

Evermore Greatful

Clash of Absolutes

Hooked on You

Every Knee Shall Bow

Catherine Folker

Party Every Day

Some of your foliage resembles my heat stressed plants. But, you have many stunning clumps. Rhinestone Cowboy appears to have bloomed well. Tahiti Sweetie shows out in your photo. I like Hooked On You, Purple Lives Matter and Come By Faith.

In terms of the season, mine was marred by the late hard freeze that impacted scapes and buds. Insects and deer (and the roaming cow) took care of quite a few plants. I was pleased with the performance of the remaining surviving plants but had significantly more rain than you.

I can't imagine much improvement over this batch of daylilies. They look spectacular to my eyes. From the mellow simplicity of Catherine Folker to the razzle dazzle of the clump shot of Rhinestone Cowboy I wouldn't have known you were having an off season. I can't pick a favorite that's for sure.............Maryl

Oh yes, late season foliage always gets ratty in dry weather. Individual blooms may look good (not right now and many of these taken earlier), but bud count and scape height are largely hidden.

wow, nice group. Boldly Going stands out with the deep coloring.Tahiti Sweetie always seems to do well no matter the heat or lack of rain for me. Foliage on a lot of daylilies here is "ratty" too. No soaking rain to speak of here either. Promises of storms often do not happen.

I am sorry that you had such a bad season. I have noticed that when we get rain here, the system starts just below Cincinnati, leaving OH high and dry. The blooms above are quite beautiful in spite of that. I especially like Come By Faith [beautiful form and color], Soft Play [also great form and color], Edge of Irrelevance, Clash of Absolutes, Tahiti Sweetie, & Kingdom Bound.

These photos certainly do not reveal a disappointing season..; lovely as usual. I especially like

Purple Lives Matter, Kingdom Bound, and Tahiti Sweetie. As usual, I would like to comment on many of them, but I will mention that Rhinestone Cowboy is a lovely clump, and that Party Every Day is amusing...reminds me of my Silly Wabbit plant.

So many gorgeous blooms and clumps. We shared exactly your weather here with the same results. I am happy we both had some bright spots in a sad season. The stand out bloom for me is Soft Play. I don’t remember seeing it before. I have a great appreciation for the simplicity and perfection.

I can agree that overall it was disappointing season. But there are always bright spots in a disappointing season, and your photos show that. Rhinestone Cowboy makes a lovely clump, and Soft Play is such a pretty shade of pink. Kingdom Bound always seems to perform well for you. Tahiti Sweetie is a standout.

Aww sorry you're disappointed. We are very, extremely dry here. Not all of Iowa, but we here are some kind of desert, looks like. I was afraid of the repeat of that awful 2012 season but it wasn't so I guess it's not too bad ))

But your daylilies look wonderful. I again like every single one here! Hard to pick favorites. Clumps look great, Rhinestone Cowboy is beautiful and every bloom looks perfect. And Tahiti Sweetie is so bright and beautiful. I love all the lights, light pink ones especially Cupid, White Icon and Come By Faith (I realize it's not a pink, but still looks very light).
