Could you do wood to match the downstairs flooring on the stairs and upstairs hallway?

That would be my first choice.

Do some type of patterned runner look. It will disguise wear and tear better, and be much better traction than wood. You should have a good family owned flooring store around that carries the better carpet lines like Stanton and Kane.

Most hotels I've been in lately have very patterned rugs in the hall.

Kempek, wood would be my first choice also, but it is noisy. It amplifies the clomping of feet going by. That is useful if you are the parent of teenagers, but it is bad if you are an innkeeper. 😁

The liability of slippery stairs is not worth keeping them all wood.

I think the carpet drives the bus so do the stairs in wood and add the hall and the runner in the same carpet you used for the bedrooms . I would never have done carpet in the bedrooms so IMO now do not add to the mess with too many different carpets. When tose bedrooms get gross next time do the floors in wood with area rugs that can actully be cleaned .

The floors were wood. and noisy. we had rugs, but it wasnt enough. We carpeted with noise reducing pads and it cut down the noise well. We will not go back to bare floors.

In real life (not inn life) I still prefer carpet in the bedroom. Soft, quiet, warm.
