They don't need much but there has to be something for them to root in. You can stuff them into tiny cracks and crevices or anywhere that can hold some small amount of soil and collect some water but they won't grow on bare rock.

They also need a bit of anchorage. They can't just sit on a bit of rock and remain in place. Even lichen needs to be able to attach itself to a surface which has some granularity.
