Initially I'm thinking I don't like it, it's weird and I would remove it. But then I think it's so weird, I would keep it. It's almost a conversation piece (in a humorous way, but that's okay too). How soon are you looking to remodel? Have you thought of holding off on remodeling, maybe just painting the walls so you can figure out how to work it into your new look.

Also, what were your plans for the space? Any inspo pics? That might help people answer.

I would remove it. There is probably not flooring underneath so that would have to be woven in and the whole floor refinished probably.

I think what's making it particularly strange is that it doesn't have any type of wall over the top to make it feel more integrated into the room, it's just a box poking out. Most (all?) three-sided fireplaces I've seen have a wall above them, and operate as a sort of room divider. I think yours could look more properly anchored and less awkward if you built a box over the top to the ceiling. If you're interested in keeping it, do an image search for three-sided fireplaces to see how it might be improved.

It looks like the intent was to divide the room into two separate areas. Can't tell from the pic but where does the chandelier line up in the room? Was one side to be used as a dining area?

I think I’ll scrap it. I want a traditional looking fireplace and this isn’t it. I can see the room divider element but this is all in the same room so it can’t be divided. I appreciate you all for adding your input!

Live with it for a while first please. In some climates, nothing is more warming mentally than a fire.

I love the fire aspect even here in NOLA when it gets cold in the winter. I’ll give it time to see what I want to do with the space of if I can rearrange it somehow.

Im thinking of adding a built in bookshelf on the smaller side of the fireplace. Nothing will be done overnight.
