replacement for Malus fire blight casualty, replant in fall or spring?

I sadly had to take down a 15 yo crabapple (schmidtcutleaf/ golden raindrops) due to fire blight. This is my first experience with this disease and it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Thankfully my other crab (Satin Cloud) about 20' away doesn't show any sign of it so far. I want to replace the tree as soon as possible b/c it provided a nice screen from the neighbors front window. I'm leaning toward Autumn Brillance serviceberry or possibly another crab. My questions are, can I replant a crab in the same location? Should I be doing anything to try and protect the other crab? Should I replant in the fall or spring?

I wouldn't plant another member of the Rosaceae family, so no Amelanchier or Malus. Try to find something in a different family. When to plant depends on your climate.

Perhaps a redbud--similar size and shape.

plant 6 to 8 weeks before ground freeze.. in my MI... planting in mid sept thru mid october... for ground freeze in mid jan or so..

this gives the tree roots.. time to settle in.. and perhaps start pumping some water.. before ground freeze ...

the usual restriction for fall planting is the availability of stock... high end or tree farms should have stock available.. but if you are relying on bigbox... you might not find anything you want...

20 years ago.. i planted 8 crabs.. i regret it e3ntirely.. almost all have them sucker to kingdom come... find anything else... dont fixate on replacing with the exact tree.. especially per flora's comments..

if you give us a pic or two.. maybe we can come up with some ideas ... hard to make tree suggestions with no idea of what is there..
