I would like to update my 1990s brick fireplace. I will probably drywall around everything, cover the cement hearth with new stone tile, and add a mantle with a shelf. But, I am stuck on the mantle piece because my fireplace opening is recessed 4.5”. Can I just make my fireplace 4.5” deeper so its flush with the brick and then put a mantle on the outside?
