How big is the island, and what stools and size are they? 16 inches is really large, especially considering shape and height. I mock up the size I’m considering to get an idea of proportions. I use cardboard so I can cut the shape as well.

big is not necessary. I would also consider the light itself, I am not a fan of clear globe or bulb lights near eye level... a cone shape is nice.

You will need to measure the island. Here is a good guideline.

So for a 16" pendant you would need an 80-88" long island (and width should be at least 32" - 40"):

8-12" on left edge + 16" pendant + 32" space between + 16" pendant + 8-12" on right edge.

I have 16" pendants on my island, which is about 80" long and 54" wide. They replaced some smaller pendants and when they first went up I thought they were huge. Now I don't give them a second thought. But you do need to make sure you have space for them, so taller people don't hit their heads on them or they don't appear to visually block the space.

It will depend on how long, and how wide your island is, and how far apart each pendant light will be. Perhaps measuring the pendants and the island will allow you to make an informed decision.
