Try a solution of 1 part of white vinegar with four parts of olive oil on the wood to repel termites and some other bugs that might already be in there. It will darken the wood but will eventually lighten. Test it out before you proceed.

All my siding has been soaked in a vinegar solution making it impervious to termites and water, leaving it maintenance free.

We added barn beams to our home in 2018. No problems with bugs.

A small amount of even the new pine lumber used in my remodel had signs of termites. In my opinion, old beams with holes and cracks should have some non-toxic treatment before bringing them inside.

You could have professionals prepare the barn wood for indoor use. Kiln drying will remove the moisture from wood and kill off any bugs and bacteria that are inside of it. Air drying the wood is a more affordable option that takes much longer and isn't as effective as a kiln.Apr 11, 2022

I have a house full of these. Nothing has been done to them, however we are not in termite country. I did have some salvaged wood that I treated with chlorpyrifos. I don't know if it's still available to the public.

Have the contractor who will be installing them take a look at them. If they were inside a barn, they should be pretty dry, but may still shrink a bit.
