But just look at all of that metal! I see no obvious plastic or nylon gears or parts. This is why some of those vintage machines are so much better than many new ones . I prefer the old mechaincal models over these new computer ones anyday and in every way.

Nope, they really are connected to nothing and don't support anything. The lid clears them by a good space.

The spouse insists it's spare parts. I was joking when I suggested it but maybe? Like extra buttons. :)

Lots of metal there for sure. Even the plastic parts (the knobs, etc.) are actually metal painted to look plastic.

I checked the manual and the parts list doesn't cover much (and I've been looking for a repair manual for other reasons and not been successful). I did note how the drawing on where to oil--which is really quite accurate--doesn't have them.

I guess it doesn't matter--they appear to be working (or not working) as intended.

Perhaps it acts as a brace when the machine is running - or perhaps a repair?

I can feel underneath and it's pretty solid. I decided to remove them to have a look but they've on there pretty good and I didn't want to mess them up (or the color-matched Sears screwdriver).

I found one on the auction website with good photos and it has the same thing, just not as clean.

If I ever get it in to a shop for a tune-up again I'll have to ask. (Naturally, there are no longer any close places to fix sewing machines. Or vacuum cleaners. Why are they always the same shop? Hmm.)

It looks like it is attached to the stitch width setting. With your machine head exposed, reset that knob and you will see the spring move.
