48" is for a small area not a living room.

Did you mean a 48” firebox? Ours is 48” in a similarly sized room. Honestly Honestly, I’ve never thought it was too small.

The best thing to do is copy a picture of a 48" fireplace into a picture of your living room at scale and see if you like the look. You can also do a picture of a 60" fireplace to compare.

We did a mock up before deciding and liked the look of a 48" linear electric fireplace. Our great room is 22'x23' and two story vaulted. Our original wood burning fireplace was also 48" so it was easy to do the mock up and paste the linear electric in at scale.

That’s great advice. I did that in our kitchen, and it definitely helped with perspective.

You better draw up the elevation of the wall so you don't end up with something like this below. Linear FPs look better in rooms that don't have tall ceilings.

Mantel or no mantel? There's no end to how you can screw this up if you're not careful in your details. You'll make your life much easier if there is a different wall for the TV placement

If you plan a TV for above the fireplace, 60" may not be large enough

Rooms like you see below look better with a traditional firebox.

Here's a room where the TV is larger than the fireplace. Someone is going to want an 80" TV screen in this room and it's going to have to move to the side wall. Anticipate your future needs.
