ive seen it on some plants over the decades... i presume the seed got wet enough that it germinated ... in the pod...

usually pods are designed to keep seed so dry.. that they stay dormant...

also.. pure speculation... most seed is released when it matures... so you have to wonder why this seed didnt leave momma.. before it sprouted.. something must have happened at some precise time of the release.. maybe a hail storm or something?????

Well, I think I’ll stick them in some dirt! I would say the thing missing was wind to scatter the seeds. These pods stick striaght up and I’ve harvested seeds by tipping them. I assume there wasn’t enough wind to tip them naturally. If Hurricane Lee heads up here I’ll bet the rest release pretty doggone well.

OK, I went out to harvest, but some already have flower buds, which I didn’t notice earlier! There is no root system. It is some kind of secondary flowering. Really interesting.

Those secondary shoots are blooming now. Dianthus carthusianorum is a great plant. It was already blooming far longer than other dianthus, but this is seriously thick icing on the cake! And, it’s tall architectural stems weave themselves in with nearby neighbors.

I saw this on some allium in my garden.
