That fireplace is in a room and house that we know nothing about. The update still needs to look like it belongs in the house, which from the few things you show, looks Mediterranean/traditional.

If the rest of your house is in the same style as the mantel, then no, don't succumb to the modern trend in fireplaces. Go to a hotel or restaurant lobby and enjoy their fireplaces! You can probably pull off the mantel; replace the tile with some other stone; put in a traditional gas insert; and then replace the mantel. You will likely love it and not regret the update.

I love your current fireplace and decor but it is very difficult to offer suggestions without seeing more of the space. Can you post some additional photos?

I absolutely love your space! I would remove the molding and mantel, replace the tile, paint the same color as the tile, and add a piece of art.

Hello, Ilikefriday... I liked your advice and I just wonder what the whole wall would look like with the bookcases painted the same color also (the inside of the book cases has a brown grass cloth and I would leave that)... What do you think? ...can you do that for me... I'm such a visual creature.... But not very tech savvy 😜
