Tranes variable speed ac xv17 vs xv18

I'm in the market to replace my ac system in south florida thats 16 years old. Running hot with sky high electric bills and a newborn here so i dont want to be without ac in florida. I'm trying to decide if it's worth going with the xv18 or if the xv17 will be just fine. Anyone install tranes new variable speed xv17 or have it and like it? Any problems?
I do know the xv17 has 75 speeds vs 750 with the xv18. Other than that I don't see to much of a difference

    The biggest problem with Tranes or any other big names in the inverter compressor space is what is required to make them work right. You'll be replacing the whole system including the furnace or AH if the unit in question is electric heat.


    Because you're in Florida it would be similar conrundrum where I live in that the areas don't use heating all that much. So furnaces can last here in my area upwards of 30 years and possibly longer.


    Due to the nature of how Manufacturer's implement their inverter operational design they design it from a "whole system" standpoint. Meaning it's only going to really work as designe if you replace everything add in proprietary control to control it.


    In a nut shell there's nothing wrong with this aspect other than what can go wrong, usually does. It hopefully won't be immediate, take years maybe if you develop any problems at all. Cost to maintain if problems do develop could be a thing due to R410a refrigerant phase out that is coming. This will only affect you if you develop a problem that requires refrigerant. (leak, or component failure like compressor or metering device / other refrigerant control etc.)


    Proprietary controls essentially means "communicating system" the pro-side of this is that the machine can slow blower speeds the pieces of the equipment "talk" to one another. However this can also lead to random fault code city. I've personally coined it "fault code hell". Most of the time these fault code issues with communicating systems are easy to fix, but on occasion I've come across machines not installed by me with random fault code issues. The installing contractor by this time has already tried to fix the issue upwards of a half dozen or baker's dozen of times back to said property. So never forget the installing contractor is going to be very important piece if the machine develops a "not so fun problem".

    Bosch BOVA IDS 2.0 (Inverter)


    The competitor to all the big manufacturers does things differently. Plays well with nearly all other manufacturers doesn't require expensive proprietary controls ramps up and down in 1% cooling steps. As many as 74 speeds depending on sizing configuration.


    Cons: Parts network isn't as robust as other major manufacturers. Certain areas may still have trouble getting the machine itself and or parts. (Talk to dealer in your area) They've been in Florida longer than Texas so this may not affect you at all.


    German engineered, made in China. Other manufacturers (like Trane for example) are merely assembled here with parts from all over the world. So assembled here in USA only goes so far in today's world.


    Due to the cost conundrum & forced proprietary hardware among other reasons I chose the Bosch Bova 1.0 for my home in Katy, Texas back in Oct. of 2019. The 2.0 (20 SEER came later to my market.)


    I don't regret my decision. The Bosch BOVA 1.0 (18 SEER) has been a great machine so far for me.


    I've installed probably more than a half dozen of these machines for others, not a single problem that I could blame Bosch for. ( I do all my own installs, only a single hand touches equipment installed by me.) This isn't to brag this is to tell you how important quality control is in 2023 and beyond.


    Does it always work out? No, that's what your installing contractor is there for.


    If you view this as "well there's thousands of other contractors I can always call someone else." --In my opinion (based on 30 years in this HVAC profession) isn't as wise and idea as you may think it is.


    The number 1 reason I hear for a newish type system problems you know why someone is calling me vs. calling their own installing contractor who installed the machine is that "We got a deal & our installing contractor's relationship with us is freyed 9 ways to Sunday."

    I have a two-stage "package heat pump". A package heat pump puts the compressor and blower into one box which sits on my condo's roof. The audible advantage of this heat pump is that when the AC is in stage 1 (compressor operates at 70%), the blower slows down and the system almost inaudible. When the system is in stage 2 (compressor at 100%), the blower operates at high speed and one hears the "whoosh" of air through the registers.

    According to the Trane AC specifications, the XV17 and XV18 use Trane Link (see the footnote) to manage the AC operation (i.e., to decrease/increase the compressor's speed) to meet demand. (Note also that the XV18 is to be installed with the Hyperion™ TAM9 Air Handler.) But what if you use the XV17 or XV18 with your existing air handler which may not be variable speed (i.e., the blower always operates at full speed) are the XV17 or XV18 then worth the price especially with the added cost of the Trane Link components. Would the XR16 two-stage AC (which works a conventional two-stage thermostat*) work nearly as well -- and be nearly as efficient -- with a blower that always operates at 100%?

    The xv18 operates at up to 18 SEER2 vs. 17 SEER2 for the xv17. Achieving that adds both complexity and cost. I suspect the incremental investment produces little financial return, but might give you bragging rights if you're at a cocktail party full of engineers or accountants. A big advantage to a variable-speed system is that proper sizing of the system is less critical than it is for single-stage or two-stage systems.

    What is the size of your current AC and how large is your house? Proper sizing is important in a humid climate. The other important thing is correct installation. Improperly installed equipment will not operate correctly and likely have a shorter life.

    What does 750 speeds mean? I am not able to drive my car 750 different speeds. Why would anyone need this for their heat pump?
