I always wash quilts before giving them away. i’ve never ironed one after it was done. I’d think it would press wrinkles in.

I like the look of a flatter quilt, so I always iron mine, front and back. Washing was mandatory because I used to glue baste my quilts. Now I do it because I like to show the new owner the ”look” it will have after it’s washed, and to let them know it’s already been washed, so not to be afraid to do it. I will not, however, be washing the 70x95, minky-backed quilt. I’m sure my washer couldn’t handle it.

I wash my quilts because I spray baste and I want that stuff out before gifting. And because the quilts are lap sized, they are easy to throw over the ironing board. I also have a ’big’ board so that helps.

Most of the time I like the crinkle look, but there have been occasions where I thought a good pressing would present better, but not many. I probably go a bit overboard prewashing my fabrics and gentle washing the quilt when finished to dissolve water soluble basting thread. Although I'm on the boat full-time now, so I've been employing quilt-as-you-go methods instead of basting.
