Kitchen Lighting for Saltbox home

We are remodeling our 100 year old kitchen. The ceiling is 87 in high. Is it possible to have pendants over the peninsula?

Yes but make sure they do not get bumped by your head so small and hung so you do not hit them.

Thank you. The kitchen sink is behind the peninsula. Suggestions for matching style?

semi-flush mount fixtures come in a variety of great styles and finishes.

If I buy semi flush mount for the peninsula, ideas please for over the sink.

While you see a lot of kitchens in pictures online with pendants over islands I would think they all have at least 8' ceilings. Depending on what the layout is, you don't always need them. I have recessed lighting over mine and it's fine. When I remodel in a couple years I won't change to pendants, and I have 9' ceilings. If you want more specific advice you need to post pictures of your kitchen so people can see what you're working with besides the ceiling height.

It's hard to give specific suggestions without a sense of your style etc. - do you have any kitchen photos to share? Or any photos of kitchens you like?

    1. I have attached a photo of the house before we bought it along with photos of the kitchen gutted. I like want and inviting cozy kitchen that will stay current for resale. I have always thought lighting fixtures are a fun design element. I had a punched out metal pendant over a peninsula. Very unexpected but it worked. I am struggling with this house design. I want to pay homage to its history. It has stood through many hurricane. The whole town (3000 population) is watching this remodel! Yikes

FYI 42" is not enough walk space in front of a fridge you really need 48 even for a french door fridge and always the DW next to the sink or you will have mess on the floor all the time

Agree with Patricia about your appliance placements. Standing in front of the sink and then turning/walking to load the dishwasher from the front or stove side will be a constant ergonomic irritation, but it looks like you've already got new framing up with that half wall/pass through window partially done. That could've been your fridge wall and then the DW could've been next to the sink.

As for pendants over the seating area, you could put something over that penisula, but since it's a narrow space, I'd probably choose something less prominent like a semi-flush or even a sconce with an articulated short arm (check Schoolhouse Electric or Rejuvenation for ideas) on that wall since it's not an area that needs task lighting.

Our ceilings are similar height @90”. we used the sarah pendants at tech lighting. might be too modern for your space but a smaller more translucent light would be what I would look for with lower ceilings..

Thanks for all the comments. That is an old drawing. I wanted to show the shape of the layout. DW is by the sink and the fridge is near the stove. If I do flush mounts on the peninsula and sink do they have to match or just be of similar style?
