I have restricted myself to using only sterile Pennisetum cultivars after experiencing far too much seeding.

Pennisetum alopecuroides has been put on the invasive plant list. It's also a fire risk and was partially responsable for the Maui wildfires. Please don't grow it, it's a serious threat.

The above comment is both misstated and overstated. While several - but not ALL - cultivars of Pennisetum alopecuroides can self seed freely, it is only considered invasive (according to the Invasive Plant Atlas of the US) in Oregon but may have naturalized elsewhere. There is a BIG difference in those conditions! There are also sterile cultivars available that are incapable of producing viable seeds.

And Pennisteum alopecuroides had virtually nothing to do with the Maui wildfires. The grasses responsible for that conflagration are guinea grass, buffle grass and molasses grass, introduced to the islands in the 1800's as cattle feed. Since the closure of pineapple and sugar plantations on Maui in the late 90's, these three very aggressive and rampantly spreading non-native grasses have taken over thousands of acres that were previously farmed. Hawaiian authorities are very familiar with these grasses and have warned about their fuel potential. They were also the fuel source for a previous 2018 Maui wildfire.
