Dining room decor

This is our formal dining room. We are torn between

  1. painting it a dark moody color (leaning towards black)
  2. a vibrant wallpaper in jewel tones for a contrast or a monochromatic wallpaper
  3. Leave the walls white and add wall decor. If wall decor - any ideas? Gilded mirrors? Wall scones? Minimalistic art?

Clearly we either want to keep it black and white and muted OR go all out. Want a stunning look either way. Would love all ideas!

What would look best. The photo frames on top of the bar cabinet will be moved in any case.

We will wait until painting is finished to buy the art. We will also be adding two floor lamps on either side of the drapes for more light and a an art light on top of the painting. We are going all black but are ready with ample sources of light in case it feels too dungeon like

I think a silver “floating” frame would be great if you paint walls black. A black floating frame if walls stay same as they are now.

    Good plan.

It’s going to be stunning! Definitely make the art decision after the room is painted.

Gorgeous!!! Did you go with SW Tricorn Black? It looks great.

    Yes. It is SW Tricorn.

Love your courage to be bold! Sure is stunning. All trim in same color really was a great decision!! Congratulations!

Thank you! We love it. Room is in desperate need of some lighting though. Thinking floor lamps next to the windows and table lamps on the buffet.

that room is beautiful! You really executed your vision so well

Lighting is a must. I think floor lamps flanking console to help light art wall up and maybe plug wall sconces on window wall either side. Just depends on outlet locations? So many great lighting options out there. Also, figure out color for framing for your art so if you do a metallic front edge we can coordinate metals. Any style thoughts? Overall budget to stay within?

A few ideas. Trying to key into looks that might work. And be conversational pieces as well as through out light.

I know the Ostrich Feather lamp is quirky but great conversation piece!

I agree the ostrich feather lamps look so fun. Has to be you though to pull it off. I can just imagine my hubby looking at me with great concern. But fun... Sigh...

The ostrich lamp is beautiful but not us at all. I could never pull that off :D definitely looking for clean lines like the west elm floor lamps. Unfortunately, we cannot do scones next to the windows because our drapes go wall to wall.

We tried floor lamps (from another room) on either side of buffet and it looked nice but I haven’t conventionally seen floor lamps there - table lamps on the buffet is what I see. But it’s good use of the empty space nect to the buffet without taking away from precious buffet space.

Style of shade: we will need something clean that will emit a lot of light without casting shadows. The chandelier’s shadows are more stark on the black walls.

I like this one. Simple with some extra details. RH is 75” high and CB is 62”.

Ok. That helps. I am not sure about the clear glass column against the black wall. The taller the better.

@RM I wondered if you would be interested in something like this. If it's not you, that's fine.

Thanks for sharing images of your painted room, it looks terrific. For lighting, I love gold-lined lamp shades, might be pretty in this space.

I’m curious as to how the black of the cabinet compares to the tricorn black of the walls.

I would skip the floor lamps and use buffet lamps and picture light over a painting.

@Kate - Do you think this room will be okay with only buffet lamps? They would be prettier IMO.

I think wall sconces would look really nice. A large mirror would also help reflect the light and make it appear brighter.

    Another one…

I think with drapery, you will have problems putting floor lamps on ends of that wall especially ones with large shades. An alternative, if you can’t put in wall sconces is a pair of floor lamps with a slimmer profile. Found these. Something like these could work well.

OR, should you ever decide to changeout the current chandelier, consider this.

That's really very nice but I'm wondering if it could use another lighting thing maybe by the entry door does it appear to have enough lighting?

Lighting is plenty now. It did take high voltage bulbs and multiple sources until we were happy. Chandelier, a floor lamp, two buffet lamps and bar cabinet has lights inside. The floor lamp was the missing piece until we figured that out.

The dining room is gorgeous! The drama of the dark walls and the painting you chose - just fabulous.

    @RM well done!

That’s just darn lovely! Love the movement of the painting - it sets a vibrant tone, great mood for dining, and the colors seem to reflect those in that beautiful rug.

    It turned out beautifully!
