You might consider using just one and hanging it horizontally behind and above the sofa.That gives the wall a little space to breathe. If it's perpendicular to the sliders it will reflect the light from outdoors which could be nice. You can tape it off on the wall with painters tape to see what you think.

I posted I didn't think it would work and then deleted it. Now that you have added a photo, I really like the look in the picture. It all depends on your space and furnishings.

I can assure you no one in California would lean mirrors like that against the wall. They would bolt them to the wall.

But reflectiing the TV? And sliders? They are beautiful mirrors but I don't think it will work for your small space.

Just the TV on the other side of the wall. I think it will pick up at least part of the garden view out the sliding glass door which is on the right as you face the windows (in my house - not the showroom that is shown in the photo. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow if they have removed enough of the mid-construction trash.

My concern with bolting it to the wall is that the wall doesn't have space to breathe as noted by calidesign.

Love them but hung and secured to the wall. I put 3 mirrors in a combined great room and dining area and it reflected light from patio outside sliding door wall. The client loved the look and I loved it too. I think I have photo. Bbl. These mirrors you have are fabulous!

Slightly different style but similar concept. Just get pro person who knows how to hang these properly. Very important.

@atfoster Adding mirrors to a wall perpendicular to a wall with a large window and view is a standard, wonderful, effective way to "enlarge" a small space. I support the concept completely. I first saw it in a long narrow beach condo my parents bought. They had a solid wall in a very contemporary interior. And they had a sofa in front of it. Their place was mostly neutral beiges. I've seen the mirrors are even more effective surrounded by darker colors and in the dark, because, obviously, it's harder to discern where the mirror starts and stops. Works best if the mirrored wall and all the walls it reflects are painted the same color light or dark. I like the strategy and look forward to using it in my own home everywhere that makes sense. For example I will be using it in my family room and owners' suite to reflect the back yard flowers and treetops; I won't be using it in the living room that would just reflect our street which was just denuded of trees by our county's misapplication of federal funding to manage the emerald ash border. How do you save the ash tree? Why exterminate them of course. Wait, what?

But back to your mirrors. With the frames, they will look a little more like fake windows. But it helps if the frames are the same color as your other windows in the room and have about the same size and shape or number of fake window panes. Just some things to consider but not hard and fast rules or anything. It's just that if you are offered a choice of frame color, keep that in mind. Hanging drapery to the side is also fun for the illusion.

I vote no on the mirrors. Beautiful, but for a large room. Not sure of your situation exactly since you didn't post a picture, but if the mirrors are going to be near a window, there is going to be light reflection. Also, do you and your guests really want to be looking at themselves then they sit opposite the mirrors? I would hate that--particularly since you are not angling the mirrors and they would directly face you.

Nothing against Flo and what she posted and what she and her clients loved but a set of mirrors like that just makes me want to avert my eyes. Were I invited to dinner I would leap to sit with my back to them.

@mytwo cents and HU-________ I am very curious about your dislike for mirrors. Do you have any thoughts as to why you dislike them so much? I don't have a problem with them and always focused on the view they reflect or the light fixtures that are suddenly multiplied. Please don't feel like you have to "justify". I am just so very much interested in making my guests comfortable. I had no clue that there were people in the world who strongly dislike mirrors. Is it just living rooms and I guess dining rooms? Or do you also dislike mirrors at a home entry or hallway? Would you prefer no mirrors in a guest bedroom? Maybe they are just ok over a bathroom vanity?

K L, maybe if I was born drop-dead beautiful, less insecure, or was incredibly narcissistic, I would think it would be great to sit on someone's sofa and look at my face in the mirror the entire time while I was talking to them. But I wasn't, and I find looking at myself in the mirror the entire time very off-putting. I would want to switch places. As I mentioned, the slanted mirror would be less offensive to me, because it was not pointing exactly at me, or a small mirror that didn't show my reflection when I was sitting down on the sofa would be ok.

To answer your other questions, I have mirrors throughout my home, and I can glance in them to see if I have lipstick on my teeth or whatever. They can look very pretty and nice as a decoration. Of course, I would want one in the bathroom. I just would hate sitting on a couch looking at my face in the mirror the whole time I was visiting with someone.

Beyond those issues, if you have kids, there are going to be fingerprints on those mirrors, a constant risk of them getting broken when kids play, and the fear of them falling over and crushing someone if they were not strongly and properly secured to the wall behind them. The individual panes would be a pain to clean.

Big decorative pieces like that can just be a problem in general. Something like that is not something that you can move to another room when you want to change things up or are tired of it. You married it, and so you better be sure that you love it for life.

Good thoughts. The good news is that it would hang behind the sofa and that our kids are grown. Your other points are certainly important considerations. Thank you.

It never occurred to me that the mirrors would make others uncomfortable. I just wanted the extra light. Something to think about for sure.

If one was hung horizontally above the sofa, no one seated across from that would be staring at themselves - it would be higher than a sitting position. And it would be safe mounted to the wall. I think mirrors add a tremendous amount of sparkle and light to a room, and this one is really beautiful.

@HU______ I'm sure you are a beautiful person and deserve to have all the self-esteem each of us was probably born with. I appreciate you taking the time to explain to me. I am rethinking the mirrors I was hoping for in my renovation. Thank you again for making me more aware. I think I hear you say it might be ok if there was no seating opposite the mirror in a living room. Would it also be ok if in a dining room but the mirror was higher than a person's line of sight when seated? I feel like we are drawing up mirror etiquette here. ☺️ Thanks so much for your input!

IMO we need to see your space and how this lwould look there . As for hU the morrors will be behind the soafe so you do not need to look at yourself . I do not think seeing the TV twice is ideal but seeing the garden is nice . I really need to see your space with your stuff unless you can put a hold until you move in

Given you are in earthquake country perhaps a reflective wallpaper might be better choice and less expensive to hang too!

The worst is a big mirror in a dining room. Great when the room is empty, but a whole row of guests has to watch themselves chew! lol

Thanks so much. Adding a photo of the open space I will be moving into. The left corner is where I was thinking about putting the mirrors, behind the sofa. The space for the TV is in a 3 foot deep by 8 foot wide niche on the right where the washing machine is currently stashed???

I like the picture you shared because:

- It gives the impression of a window where none actually exists.

- It reflects light, which every room needs.

- The mirror is broken up into panes. I think I'd have a less positive reaction to one large mirror.

Having said that, I do agree with the poster who said it should be bolted to the wall /not just leaned against it. Especially in California, where y'all have earthquakes, it just seems safer. It also seems safer if you have children or pets in the household, who might knock it down.

Some people buy too many shoes, others too many electronic gadets. I'm addicted to vintage mirrors. I love them and own way too many. I say go for the idea, but not with these mirrors. Mirrors can really open up a space and make it look bigger. But if these are crammed all the way up to the ceiling, they are going to make your space look smaller, well... because they are crammed in. Believe me, these are not the only vintage mirrors out there for you to fall in love with. Once you start looking, you will find more that you adore that are better sized for your space and have a bit of breathing room.

With the sliding doors and large windows, I vote no. Buy a large piece of art to go over the sofa. Lamps can bring in added light.
