Modernize This Home

Recently bought this home and desperately need to modernize the curb appeal.
I really dislike the orangy brick with rusty-brown roof. I thiught to paint the brick, but I've read a lot advising against it. What can I do relatively inexpensivly to give it a fresh look.

Remove the shutters immediately. Get a more contemporary porch light. More money is to remove the dated meatball bushes and get better landscaping.

What do I relplace the shutters with... looks naked with nothing I'd think

How old is the roof? Does it need replacing soon?

I would also take off the shutters. The house will not look naked without them.

Lou, we also thought our house would look naked without shutters (after being advised on folks here to do the same). After taking ours off and giving us a few weeks to get used to it, we think it looks much, much better without. I agree that shutters don’t fit the style of your house and that it will look much better without them.

It's a great house. I'd get rid of the shutters and learn to love the warm brick. I look at houses like spouses. You pick them because of a bunch of things you love. You love them for all their great features and despite the less-than-great features. You don't ask them to a nose job.

Modern landscapes are often grasses. A nice selection of grasses would change the look. I'm not a big fan of heavily pruned yews. At least one of your shrubs looks like something else. Would it flower if not pruned?

    Shutters are gone.

Found a warm sage in the horizontal stone so I think the front and garage doors and big hoise numbers will.give it a new look.

You work fast! Looks great shutterless.

I love your house! The colors in the stone are awesome. :)

So much better. Can we discuss turquoise for your front door?

Turquoise is one of my favorite colors. Storm door on actual door? Show me a shade you have in mind.

Regarding the landscape, I don't think wavy edged beds with boulders are appropriate for the house style. Nor are the meatballed shrubs.

Ditto to what floraluk2 says. And the bed on the right side should come out to the path. Good landscaping would be revelatory.

Wow what a difference without the shutters. Looks great. Agree with others that some up-to-date landscaping will help. Right now everything is tight - balls, rock border - loosen it up. I wonder if there is something that can be done to the paver walk - the red is distracting??

I wish I knew the color name but this is a project I did with a similar toned brick and white trim.

The landscaping is a definite on the to do list. Planning to bring it out to the sidewalk - no grass. Rocks are going as are the big shrubs. I'll work on some designs but the work has to wait for Spring.

New deck on the back this fall and Michigan snow doesn't mox well with new landscaping.

That turquoise is a knockout, Hallett! SW Blue Mosque is similar.

Lou, your house looks so much cooler without the shutters!

    Here are a few suggestions:

Turquoise is a great midcentury color. Your stone is great as are the deep eaves and low slung roof. You're so lucky no one muddled this gem up. Would love to see a closer view of your front steps and porch. I'm feeling a little FLW influence with the planters and brick color. Lucky you! And BTW, you don't need to modernize this home, just take it back to its roots. It was modern before modern was cool.

Wow, Lou! I offer no suggestions, I just love your house. What a change, just removing the shutters. I generally love shutters but totally agree with removing yours. Nice 👍🏻!
