I'd go with another Japanese maple......maybe something like Fireglow, with intensely red fall color.

Most JM's in our location can tolerate a LOT of sun, as we are so far north and even summer sun is not very intense. The exceptions are heavily variegated cultivars or those with gold or pale foliage. 'Bihou' is a bit of a fussy selection that I'd site in at least afternoon shade. I know of a number of purchasers of this variety that have had issues.......

Thanks gardengal! I have been hand watering Bihou this year hoping it would become happier. It is in a east facing location but looks like even that is too much sun.It is good to know it is fussy.

I will look into getting a fire glow. The pics look great.

Any suggestions for replacing bihou (eventually)? I was thinking of a Acer circinatum dwarf but I think they color later..

Depends on the selection and how much sun they receive - 'Pacific Fire' would be a good choice. According to Great Plant Picks " Fresh, light green leaves turn golden-yellow with dappled shade and are blushed orange in full sun early in the autumn, holding their color well though the season. This small tree is a great choice for the urban garden."

GPP lists a number of highly recommended cultivars of JM for this area you might want to check out. And with the dryness of our summers, a deep, slow soaking every week or so should keep leaf scorch to a minimum. I grow my collection of JM's in containers and I bump the watering frequency for them to 2-3 times a week.

I will try deep soaking. That might help my Katsura as well. It is also suffering from leaf burn, though not as bad as last year.
