Please suggest kitchen backsplash tile

Full kitchen remodel was complete. Minus the the tile backsplash. The countertops ended up being cooler, grayish white compared to the cabinets that are a bit warmer, creamy white. Now, I’m hoping to find the perfect tile to pull them together. The kitchen is very open to the rest of the small house (entry, living, dining and sunroom) which is a ranch. Tile will go to upper cabinets and to ceiling behind the stove. I had hoped that range wall’s tile would be “the wow” in the room. But, now, I’m afraid to do anything to dramatic as the space is so much more open than I’d envisioned. Some of my pics show an elongated hexagon tile I’m considering. The white is too bright white, the cream is too yellow. Would mixing the two work to balance them out? The other two shades of greish and mushroom are pulling colors from the counters. Would using those be better, staying away from the whites all together? Or, a mix of all four colors? Would that be way too busy? I’m open to any other tile suggestions too! What do you envision works there? I’m thinking classic, neutral with just a bit of mid century modern flair (is that a thing? 🤔).

Here's a mockup of a deep blue green. The tile shape reminds me a bit of the spines of books. (tile here) Several sites let you upload a picture and create mockups like these - worth a try if you feel like trying out different tile shapes, colors, and orientation, and even grout color.

Or just drama on the range wall and paint everywhere else... (tile here)

Love your bookcases! If it were me I would likely do something dark and interesting to complement wood tones but just personal preference

I agree with above- something interesting with maybe darker.. LOVE the bookcases as well

WOW! The bookcases are outstanding! I haven't seen anything like that on Houzz, and as a bibliophile I heartily approve!

Sorry not a big help on the backsplash, and colors are so hard to tell on a monitor. Having said that I like the shape you've picked and the darker colors (the 2 colors on the right in your bottom picture.)

Would you consider orienting the tiles vertically instead of horizontally? Are you set on a neutral, or would you consider a color (deep green or moody blue?) Also, have you looked into edge pieces (bullnose or jolly) for your outside corner and for the sides of your cooktop wall? Asking in case it affects your decision on tile choice.

"I’m afraid to do anything too dramatic as the space is so much more open than I’d envisioned" I understand what you're saying, but you don't want to play it so safe that you end up being disappointed. I love a bit of drama, and your cooktop wall isn't so big that doing something a bit more colorful there would be overwhelming.

Are the ceiling lights, undercab lights and pendants all the same kelvin? On my phone they’re fighting each other and and the kitchen surfaces.

Everyone likes the bookcases! There are tile/countertop websites that let you upload a picture of your kitchen and play around with tile selections for your kitchen. Try one of those.

I'm not a fan of the hexagon and I don't like white/white/and more white, but I don't live there. How about some brown wood tile that matches your island? You don't have to worry about doing something that is too over the top (well, unless you go really crazy) because everything else is muted and toned down, particularly with the books. How about something with a diagonal tile pattern to match the diagonals in your front door?

Ohhh, Chicagoans, I’m loving your ideas! Gorgeous. And yes, you all are so right. I’ll ditch the neutral idea and keep looking for something dark and moody to complement the walnut bookcases. My partner will be happy to hear you all commented on the bookcases. Only a small fraction of his books, we’ve got cases in every room. These walnut builtins were a splurge in our small budget cabinet order. Thank you all!

Love the book cases too! i agree on darker to compliment the “weight” of the dark bookcases. Can’t wait to see some selections.
