Hi, could you please provide dimensions for your space, a simple graph paper diagram including the adjoining rooms. Everything in your photo is light neutrals. Is that your palette? Are there any colors you want to bring in to the space?

But you're showing it from the sky, you have no dimensions, no drawing with dimensions to indicate "large" as in how large?

I would keep your 2 upholsterd chairs at the ends of your dining table, but replace at least 2 or all 4 of the side chairs with vintage and antique wood chairs. Not these particularly, but you get the idea

I would add more silver and sparkle and crystal to your cabinet display and your coffee table top. Mirrored tray? Maybe change the hardware on your cabinets to lucite or bling-y. Move the nice plant to the window. (It's a nice white planter and a nice plant).

Ditto Jan Moyer. I’d also add that a picture from your entry into this room would be very helpful. I’m not clear on whether there is an entry hall & it leads directly to this room or if the entry door is somewhere in this room - that is one steps directly into room with no separate entry space. Looks like there might be a beautiful view into back outdoor space from this living / dining room - please show that too - can it be seen from entry? All that openess & natural light seems gorgeous & really affects plans for indoor decor IMO.

I have no idea what modern luxury looks like, but the space looks quite lovely. I agree about moving the rug, and I would remove the two plants by the china cabinet and hang colorful art on the wall in that area.

PS: It looks like your side chairs might be slipcovered? You could immediately change to something more punchy

Compliments on a very lovely home! I actually like everything and think all you need are some pops of color. I also think moving the rug from the dining room to living room is a good idea if it’s not to big for the area. Personally I don’t like a dining room rug as it makes moving the chairs more difficult. Since your entry door is blue, perhaps layer a blue patterned rug on top and add pops of color in blues and coordinating colors. I really think that’s all you need. Since your palette is so neutral, you could go with any color to elevate the space. I only said blue as that’s the door color and figured you picked the color.

Julie, your home is gorgeous - all those windows & giant plants! The greenery & wood blinds over patio doors / windows add nice life & texture. The fiddle leaf trees at front door are amazing! I agree with @djacob Z6a SE WI about adding pops of color & trying the large dining rug under the sofa & chairs. I think it’ll cozy up that area. I also agree with her about adding the blue of your front door to the room. Maybe change out the throw on the couch & swap out a couple of pillows for ones with blue in them. I would add art - that wouldn’t sacrifice your neutral toned palate but would add interest to walls & over that very interesting fireplace top. I’d swap out the mirror for a tall & narrow art like @mytwo cents shows you. Not necessarily that art but that size / shape. I’d also have a larger art piece at stair landing & on both sides of china cabinet. I think those simple changes will definitely elevate your space as you’re wanting to do. Take your time choosing art - when you see a piece that makes you smile & speaks to you, you will recognize it. Art is very personal.

What a beautiful home!!!

Here are things that I would want to do with this space if it were mine:

1. Like others have suggested move the rug over from the dining area to the sitting area & layer another one on top.

2. Remove the two plants from the sides of the buffet & instead hang some small-to-medium art pieces there. I'm picturing two symmetrical ones on either side (landscape orientation). This way, it won't compete with the hutch, but instead be complementary. Actually, I would keep the plant cloest to the back doors & just slide it over closer to the door.

3. Add wainscoting to the staircase walls. Wainscoting is such a great & classic way to elevate a space while making it look effortless.

4. Bring in some touches of brass - maybe the chandelier over the dining table, a floor lamp by the seating area, and the mirror on the fireplace.

5. Instead of flanking the mirror with candlesticks, I'd opt for a more organic type of arrangement...try to stick with the rules of the 3. You could have smaller candlesticks of varying heights on one side. The other side could maybe have a decorative box or books, something stacked mabe with a tiny plant, vase, or bowl on top.

6. Finally, I'd remove the plant behind the chairs - the one near the patio door. Or you could put a smaller plant there. But the way it is now, it's covering up the fireplace, and I just feel like it's too much. You already have a huge tree on the other side of the fireplace.

I like symmetry too, but too much can make a space look uninteresting & not organic.

The 30' ceiling is taking it's toll on creating something warm and luxurious. In the end, closing off the room at the second floor level, to reduce the over height, would be one of the most beneficial projects that you could undertake.

Replace hutch with a sideboard, add art, larger chandelier, no faux plants, different throw pillows, pad under dining rug, rug under coffee table.

Wow Julie - you don’t waste any time! Love both of the new throws on sofa. I agree with you about not liking the polka dots on the rug. Especially with the accent tiles in your flooring.

The only thing that bothers me is the fireplace flue color. I would paint it the same color as the walls. It seems enough of a focal point as a design element without the contrasting paint.

I would replace your hutch, rug, chandelier, and mirror if it were me. In fact, I would replace the coffee table and console table with modern pieces.

Using the 8 ft doors as my scale, I would guess the ceilings are 18 ft., or 20 ft max.

You are right. That was a guesstimate. It’s 20 feet. (Measured exactly.) Yes, 8 ft. doors. 👍

Also, not in the budget to replace all those things but lovely suggestions.

I really like the blue pillows you added! Not going to lie though, I liked the original throw blanket.

I still think there's too much symmetry going on on the mantle. And one too many plants in the seating area, as well as by the hutch. I'd get rid of the large one, but maybe that's just me. The wall might feel a bit empty, but I think if you add just a couple of small art pieces, it will be plenty (sometimes less is more). The plant that you moved closer to the door, I'd move it out farther from the wall. It looks like it's trying to hide in the corner, LOL.

Trial & error....overall though, it's a very lovely space!!

I use silk plants from time to time, but there are trees out there that are far more realistic than the ones you have in the room. 3 of them seem like 2 too many.

Your room requires a larger hutch and not in gray.

I don't like the random angle for the seating in the room and would move the pieces to a more traditional layout to accommodate the angled fireplace.

I think your non-boxy layout is lux and modern and refreshingly not squared off, and if you like it and it promotes conversation you should keep it. (If want to try something else, by all means do)

I am constanntly amazed by suggestions that people throw out major pieces of furnture and a lot of decor and replace them with no-name squares of unspecified art, sized to be a big box or squared off into little boxes. Does one go to Home Depot to haul this stuff back or wait 20 weeks for it to be delivered?

My own suggestion would be to make small changes. I'd be on the lookout for a blue platter to replace the white one at the center of your shelf. If you've got some sparkly crystal and metallic shiny things I'd experiment with them in the hutch. If you ever see a hutch you love buy it, or if you have a sudden flash that a richly painted hutch or wallpapered hutch would be over the moon in your space, have at it with that hutch.

But otherwise have fun. Your house already is a very lovely space many would be so pleased to have and to be invited into. We can all pick over the pictures and imagine what we do or what would get us more clients in the photo book. But some of the most beautiful spaces are really lived in private spaces, not insta-whatever one-dimensional

Totally agree with mytwocents……you asked to elevate your space, not completely redesign it with all new pieces of furniture, art, rugs blah, blah, blah. I like the blue you’ve added and I like the arrangement of your furniture! I also think do it a bit at a time and live with the changes you made before doing more. Once again, you have an absolutely gorgeous house!!
