I need help in designing my family room

Greetings! I'm seeking advice on arranging the layout of my family room. There are four windows and a fireplace positioned in between them. I'm unsure about where to place the TV, sofa, and other furniture. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could provide guidance. I've attached a photo for reference. Additionally, I'm interested in upgrading my fireplace to a contemporary look within a reasonable budget. Thank you.

How many people will want to sit and watch TV at the same time and how many will want to sit on the sofa to do it?

Do you have a photo of what kind of fireplace is contemporary to you?

Is that a functional fireplace with flue and chimney? Or gas burning? Or the type with glass rock and flame, but no heat value? That will help you decide where to put the Tv as it’s common these days for people to place them over a fireplace. You would not be able to place it there if it’s one of the first two I’m pretty sure.

You have quite a large space to work with. As mytwocents said how many people will sit on sofa? Do you have any pictures of your furniture? Or are you starting new? I like what you have done with color in this room. I like the white surround on the fireplace. Is it the gold what you don’t like? I bet there are paints that you could use to paint the gold black to match the rest of the inset. IMO…..

There are others who can chime regarding the paint.

It looks like the wall in your second photo could easily work for a TV over a console. That way there are not windows facing the TV and creating a glare.

Hi, We are family of 6 (4 adult and 2 kids) and we currently have sectional sofa that we have to remove due to water damage. since we are trying to repair everything we are going to do new paint, hardwood floor and rearranging the place where it may become more functional. Fire place is gas fire place and it becomes hot when we trun it on.

So I do not believe you can put a tv above a gas fireplace. I agree with Douglah that the wall in the 2nd pic is a good place for the TV. However, if you want seating in front of fireplace, that may clash with the TV viewing seating. I think you have to decide what function you want for your fireplace. Do you want seating there, or is the fireplace used just to warm the TV viewing area?

Put the TV on the wall in the second photo. Then place a sofa facing the TV, 2 comfy armchairs facing the fireplace, and perhaps a comfy swivel chair to the right of the fireplace, Swivel so that whoever sits there can enjoy the fire or swivel around and watch TV.

Tara, I thought of that also, but wondered if there would be enough room for fireplace chairs behind the sectional. That’s why I was asking for pictures of the sectional.

With all that natural light I would paint that whole room that beautiful blue..then perhaps two matching ultra modern recliners ..one on each side of the fireplace..
this would allow the right size …L shape …sectional..to face the tv wall…..with the back facing the kitchen to separate it from the living space, visually…
at this point ..the right full sized oriental rug ( with some of the blue in the pattern) and the proper tiny sleek contemporary tables where needed…then you can add art …to the walls

You need to call in a fireplace pro to see what needs to be done about the high temps from the fireplace before you consider putting a TV on it or furniture close to it. You've already had water damage so you don't want to risk fire damage.

It's difficult to determine a furniture layout from a photo. How long/wide is the room? How large are the windows? What rooms are adjacent to this room? Do you have furniture you want to keep? Etc., etc. You need to post a scaled, dimensioned plan, with all windows, doorways, and any architectural features clearly outlined. A measuring tape, pencil, ruler and graph paper are all you need.

Not to belabor the point but if you have no idea what your fireplace is going to be and look like, you're just guessing about how to arrange the space. You have to start with researching your fireplace options if you aren't keeping what you have. You might even want to actually install the new fireplace before deciding what color to paint the walls etc.

Listen to your heart and do what you like. It doesn't make sense to listen to others advice if you are the one living there. Be creative to your interests...

Whatever you do. Do not put a tv over the fireplace.

I agree with an L shape with the long side of the L facing the TV, the short side opposite the fireplace. It doesn't have to be a sectional, you can achieve the same shape with a love seat and chairs. Or a love seat, with chairs flanking it, then a game table opposite the fireplace.

If it was mine, I'd have plants in the corners on the window side.

I'm not a designer so I don't have pictures, just a grandma's lifetime of experince in houses with only 1 gathering room and 1 TV.

We had/have problems with our gas fireplace wall getting hot. Inspection found cracks in the flue. At the time we were told we could use it on low for a few hours at a time. We have a painting hanging above it, not an expensive one.

Just got an idea for the fireplace. Instead of rebuilding the trim around it, why not paint it. Whatever color you choos for the wall, do the fireplace in a darker shade. For example, using the current wall color, I'd go with a navy blue or dark gray.

How often do you use your fireplace? Most people watch TV every day and use their fireplace seldom. I agree you should not put the TV over the fireplace - bad for the electronics and you can't see it from the kitchen. To modernize the fireplace I would have that mantle removed, have the firebox surrounded with either the same stone as the current facing or wide wood moulding painted the same color, then add a floating wooden mantle over it. We did this on an ugly red brick fireplace after painting it white. Cost about $100 not including the 6 inch deep, 5 feet long live edge wood beam. I have included a picture mostly for tthe beam. Also, I would paint the enttire room white to play up the fabulous natural light.

We’ve had several homes with TVs over a gas or wood burning fireplace. Zero issues. The houses here are designed that way. I use my gas fireplace daily during the winter

No issues with our tv mounted above our gas fireplace…our fireplace is used regularly in the winter. Pinterest was my inspiration for redesigning our fireplace. I’ve attached a couple of ideas. The accent wall would be very easy and inexpensive.

Here’s a room similar to what you seem to have.

I highly recommend a Tv that does not look like a tv… as u hate tv’s and have completely gotten rid of mine, however, that may be an impossibility with a family of 6.

I love my frame tv. I change the art with seasons

Draw a scale drawing (paper with grid lines works the best) and cut out furniture shapes in heavy paper and move things around and try it out. That is really the only way to do this for YOUR life, not others who post here. Think of traffic flow and if you are OK with seating facing backs to windows or doors. And paint the walls a nice white or pastel and over up the dark blue. Hopefully the new floors are real wood and not plastic that looks like wood. Nice LARGE room - wish I had one that large. Have fun!

Ithinkyour fireplace is lovely and I’d do an armor to put the tv in. Looks like you have plenty of room to break up your room with two seating areas. One for tv and one for fireplace

This is a beautiful room. I'm at the furniture layout stage in our own house. The best way to tackle this is to start by drawing out the room to scale on graph paper. Then measure the furniture that you plan to use and make to scale paper pieces, each labeled with the name you have for each chair, sofa, table, and chest. Arrange them on paper until you find an arrangement that you like best. Take a picture of it. Then let interested friends and family try their hand at the arrangement. Someone may come up with an even better arrangement that has not occurred to you. Be open to their suggestions and to getting some new pieces, or eliminating some of the pieces you already own. Take into consideration the number of seats you need, including how many will watch television at one time and the lighting necessary to make for a comfortable room. Swivel chairs are great for a tv room. I fought the idea of hanging a tv over our fireplace in our old house. It turned out to be a great idea. Placing the tv over the even taller fireplace in our new house wasn't such a difficult decision.

Then decide the colors in the upholstery you want to use. If the upholstery is light, you can probably use a dark wall, but if you plan to use dark upholstery, there will have to be tons of light to make an all dark room pleasing. I prefer contrast, dark upholstery with light walls, or visa versa.

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts, as they are much like what I have be thinking about for our house. Best wishes in making your house, your home!
