Help me pick a wallpaper!

last modified: 3 years ago

we have a home bar area (separate from the kitchen and family room) and I am going to be putting up 2 wood floating shelves. the wallpaper I picked is nice - it's gold with silver (the gold will pick up the gold handles on the cabinets and the wall sconce). but I feel it's too plain. I don't want anything too busy for a pattern but it would be nice to make that wall stylish. OR (and this is the option I'm leaning towards), maybe I can just bring some decorative elements to put on the shelf (along with some stemware and the liquor bottles) to jazz it up? I've never hung wallpaper. the guy at the wallpaper store said the one I picked would be great for a beginner since I don't have to line up patterns. photos are below. TIA!

some photos of the bar area and wallpaper.

the lower cabinets will be replaced with a dark brownish-grey color.

Glass or mirror shelves, maybe a mirrored background and maybe lights inside the niche You can probably easily rig up LEDs these days or get custom made neon if you're in the mood.

In the meantime, here are some other options for gold-white wallpaper that are more oomphy. All of this is Peel-and-Stick, so you can reposition it if you make a mistake. It comes from the website Spoonflower. If you click on the pictures below they enlarge.

Something more interesting, like the first two from @mytwo cents, are definitely on the right track. The challenge with the more flamboyant/colorful/busy papers, is that they may make TOO much of a statement. But the first two are elegant and add some pizzazz to the bar wall - more than the wallpaper you initially chose.

I think the counter and wallpaper are too similar, but one has swirls and the other stripes. Like you tried to match the colors, but this was the best you could do.

I won't make any wallpaper suggestions as I'm on my own endless hunt for the perfect powder room wallpaper! Soon I'll be able to decoupage the whole bathroom with all the samples I have collected. LOL

@chispa thanks for that comment! you nailed the design issue on the head. I couldn't figure out why it didn't look right until you said the wallpaper is too close in colour to the countertop!

No disrespect but your wallpaper feels like a very dated look to me.

I’d find a patterned paper you love that pulls in the warm wood tones in your entry.

Can you show all angles of the room? It would help to see your other decor.

    Have you considered tile?

@Jilly - I thought the same thing - what about tiles - but wallpaper is much easier to work with when putting shelves up. And harder to find the exact right one.

    Maybe tile-look wallpaper? :)

I’ve seen some very nice ones on IG and by Googling (including home bar areas), but don’t know enough about the OP’s overall style to suggest specific ones.

ETA: Lily, if you’re feeling hesitant about wallpaper there, your idea of just shelves and decor are perfectly fine. You could always live with that a bit, then change it later if you find something you love.

That setup already sounds great—the gold tying into the cabinet handles and sconce will definitely give it a cohesive look. If you feel it’s a little too plain, you’ve got two good options: either add decorative elements on the shelves (plants, books, unique glassware, etc.) or go for a wallpaper design that’s subtle but still has some character.

Since it’s a bar area, you might want to check out some bar wallpaper design ideas. They’re usually not too busy, but they can add just enough depth and atmosphere to make the space feel intentional and stylish. And since you’re new to wallpapering, peel-and-stick options could be a really easy starting point.

Do you want the bar to feel more elegant/lounge-like or more playful and casual? That might help narrow down the final choice.
