Your house is gorgeous! if you choose to tile (which may require stripping the paint), large-format terra cotta tile or glass tile would look beautiful and both are period, but they also require daily to weekly washing depending upon how clean you are and how dusty it is.

I feel your pain. Someone painted the floor of my garage red just before I purchased it 20 years ago. It still flakes off and creates red dust that adheres to everything no matter how hard I try to get rid of it. At least it's in the garage so not really noticeable.

I've been admiring the concrete floors of high end new homes recently and have learned they are coated in Polyurea. I wonder if this is something you could use to go over your floor. They're done on patios too. You'd have to find a local installer. Here's one I've been referred to in my area. It's a franchise so fully investigate in your area.
