things usually dont happen within a few weeks.. do we know why the prior owner sold them ...

lastly.. its fall.. many of my houseplants are beginning to shed older leaves... its just part of the sun going in decline.. and winter starting... light levels falling...

just snip off the leaf.. leaving a little stem.. and when the stem dries.. pull it off the crown ...

its on my mantelpiece across from a window so they get plenty of light. Previous owner sold them as she was moving country. okay will do- thanks a lot !

It sounds like you're over watering this plant. The soil doesn't need to stay moist all of the time, let it dry out thoroughly before you water it again. Keeping the soil moist could cause root rot. Remove the yellow leaves, so you can see if anymore turn yellow.

Across the room from a window is almost certainly inadequate light. Move it to direct light for the fall/winter.
