Yesterday was fiercely hot. Today was 95+ befor 10 a.m. And another Santa Ana coming next week. Poor roses are TRYING to bloom, but it's blast furnace time. Desert weather at the coast

It has been in the 90s (high) here SF Bay area - 4 blocks from the Bay in San Rafael - for 3 days, due to an unusual (for here) "off shore flow" (it always confuses me that that means the wind is blowing towards the ocean from the land, while an "on shore flow" means it is blowing from the ocean towards the land - seems like it should be the other way around). However, in 2 days the high temps are supposed to drop by 10-15 degrees, which means the fog is probably going to be coming in the gate. We are heading to the yacht club for dinner, as it is right on the water, and even in weather like this is much cooler than here, although only 10 minutes away. Jeri, I hope your area gets the same effect - one joy of living on the coast ( at least here) is that hot weather does not last very long.

ASIDE - once a long long time ago when I lived and worked in San Francisco, I was in a bus crammed full of people going home from work, and it had been very hot for over 3 days. As usual, no one was talking to anyone else, and because of the unusual heat wave, everyone was too hot. The bus was heading West, straight up to the top of Russian Hill, and as the bus crested the top of the hill and started down, you could suddenly see the ocean for the first time - there was a huge fog bank coming in. The entire bus burst into cheers and clapping, instantaneously.

Jeri, the weather has done a complete 180 between the east and west coast. The weather maps look crazy, temperature-wise. Where it had been a little cooler out your way, we've been 10-20 degrees above average here. NOW, we're heading into 20 degrees BELOW average this weekend, and you've got a searing Santa Ana.

By the way, that second pic should be on a calendar next year ;)

Things are awful here in Tuscany-continued heat and drought. Will this wretched summer never end??? Jackie, you are so, so, SO lucky that heat doesn't last where you live. Anymore, in Italy it makes no sense to call them "heat waves"-it's always hot,for months on end. I am totally sick of this.

Jeri, sorry to hear about the heat; it certainly sounds tiresome.

Bart, I was wondering how you folks were doing down there. While it has been raining in Milan, a couple of hours north of us, down here in Piacenza it's probably the driest I've seen it since we moved here over twenty years ago; no rain to speak of since August, and that wasn't enough to break the drought, and none in the forecast. Temperatures are predicted to hit 90F/31C today and tomorrow, and then start to fall. At least the house is comfortably cool. There are a lot of unhappy plants in the garden, though others are hanging on.

Melissa - I looked up your weather, and if I did it correctly it is good news - starting tomorrow it said it would gradually be cooler each day for the next 7 days, and then in 1 week from today there was a 70% chance of rain! I hope that prediction is correct, as of course they are not always.

The high here yesterday was 95 degrees F, but when we went out this morning I could sense something had changed in the air. Sure enough, when we went for an errand, we could see the fog bank 15 miles away coming in from the ocean.

Yes, Jackie, temperatures are forecast to start dropping tomorrow, and stay lower and more nearly seasonal. The rain forecast I take with a spoonful of salt: nineteen times out of twenty forecast rain doesn't arrive. If it does, well, thank goodness for that.

Congratulations on your fog bank! It sounds wonderful.

Melissa - I am so glad that your weather will be getting cooler! When that happens here, it is amazing how that lifts my mood.

Yes, the fog is a treasure. When it gets over 90 degrees here for over about 3 days, the saying (from the 1960s, of course!) is that "the Valley sucks". What this is referring to is that the Central Valley of CA, which is all of the area from the Coast range of mountains to the Sierra Nevada mountains, and 2/3rds the length of the state, (The Central Valley is 450 miles long, 50 miles wide, and 20,000 square miles) gets the hottest, and of course the huge amount of hot air there goes up. This "sucks", or pulls in to SF Bay through the Golden Gate, massive amounts of cool ocean air laden with moisture. Result: fog all over the entire Bay, and along the coast, and frequently also overcast skies. The high here for today is supposed to be 65 degrees F, 30 degrees lower than 2 days ago.
