Ideas for a complete redo?

How can I make this living room work? It’s the main space of our small house and I’ve never been able to make it work.

Your living room layout looks very nice! When budget allows and if you agree, replace the rug so it’s smaller and laid in just the sofa sitting area. Something with nice accent colors.

Nice natural light! - Can you put the cabinet directly under the TV? I would probably find another spot for the console table on the diagonal in the corner - maybe a nice floor lamp there instead?

Yes, I can move the console over and eventually will lower the tv. I have two of those accent chairs, but not great space for both. I’m wanting to scratch the sectional and get new seating furniture, minus the console that I love.

So you'll center the buffet and TV, and center a new sofa (not a sectional) on the buffet as well. You should have room for your two accent chairs to go side by side with backs to the window to create a conversational area in relationship to the sofa.

I would remove the plant stand under the cross picture. Do you actually use the bench? If so, keep it. If not, I'd remove it and see if the console you love in the corner could either go where the bench is or behind your new sofa. If not, hopefully you can find another place for it in your home.

I think you just need a hint of contrasting color in your new sofa. It kind of melts into the call color too much. Your arm chair, buffet, and dining table all have a rich color to them that draws the eye. Your sofa should too.

It is a pretty cool space and a very cute dog.

What part doesn't work? It looks ok for a couple people watching TV, but not great for friends who want to converse. Also, the TV is too high and should be centered over the cabinet below.

If new furniture is on the table, can you post pictures of sofas that appeal to you? There are so many beautiful, colorful sofas that can elevate the feel of your living room.

Is the carpet staying or can it be removed?

Definitely center the console under the tv. That will help immediately.

With all that natural light ....adding some color to the walls would go a long way…to maximize the architectural features…

also …in order to make the seating area more cozy ….add a colorful rug in front of the tv ….then pick a shade from the rug to paint the wall behind the tv…this will accentuate the architecture and create a visual focal point…

the furniture placement could be fine tuned to use the blue chair better..and offer other possibilities…if you can post a floor plan with measurements…

Your sweet pup seems to be content in that spot facing the kitchen...someone must be preparing something lol.

Have you considered moving the sofa right next to the stair rail? Then you could arrange two side chairs in an L or a U shape with it. Swivel chairs would be great so they could face the TV, the windows, or the room.

You might consider moving the TV more to the left towards the window and lowering it. Then moving the blue chair to the corner and removing the table beside it. You could then add a tall plant in between the chair and console, and put a floor lamp behind the chair. You might also consider removing the bench and instead use a sofa table behind the sectional. Here are some visuals which might aid you in your endeavor:
