It isn't about how much lighter or darker the floor is, but you need to get the right undertones, so the floors and existing trim/woodwork complement each other.

Going darker or lighter than wood work is personal preference and finding the best look for the space, so don't get swayed by other people's personal preference.

I have had wood floors that matched my cabinets and wood floors that contrasted ... just different choices in different spaces.

Are you on a slab or basement? If you can do site finished wood floors, you will have a lot more options for staining the floors in the best stain color to go with your woodwork.

Also before you make a final selection, you should buy a box of the flooring you are considering, so you can see what the current dye lots look like. Your sample could be old and not really match current production colors.
