Need help with organization

Hi there - in need of organization for several rooms in my apartment-

The 1st & 2nd photos show my dining room and entry hall. You basically walk right into my dining room since there’s no hallway. My husband tends to use my dining chairs as his personal closet so I bought him a drying rack. It’s not very nice to look at but if I move it into a different room, he will go back to hanging things on the chairs. He is a swimmer and is hyper sensitive to mold, so he dries all his towels and flip flops on the rack. We also have shopping carts in this corner but sometimes those go in the car so they’re not always out.

Any suggestions on what I can do here?

I do have a coat hanger on the opposite side of the entry door, but that is filled with coats & bags.

The 3rd, 4th & 5th picture is my husbands desk area. It’s near the kitchen, so you can see it when you’re in the dining room and living room. It’s always cluttered. I’m looking for ideas to clear up the items on the floor and organize his charging station.

The 6th picture is an extension of the kitchen. My husband keeps his huge protein powder containers everywhere bc there’s no proper place for them and it’s driving me crazy. The wicker bins below are already filled with cereal and other items we use. I’m thinking of getting a table to use as extra counter space, since currently his desk his serving as this as shown by the blender on his desk and another gallon of distilled water. Any suggestions?

THANK YOU! Also open to ideas to make my apartment look nicer.

Is this a rental property? How many square feet?

Getting organized starts with (ruthlessly) eliminating any excess items via gifting, donating or trashing.

Then figure out how best to organize and store what is left. For example, you have open shelving which perhaps could be converted to cabinets etc. to minimize the visual appearance of stored items. A 2-D plan of your apartment might help posters find some spots for added storage.

Finally, behavioral changes may be needed to use cabinets/closets rather than leave items out in the open in order to reduce visual clutter.

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for your reply! My husband is obsessed with mold management and would never keep a wet towel in the bathroom as there’s only one window and according to him not enough ventilation in there. It’s why he would also never keep his toothbrushes in the bathroom.

Do you know if the sell separate doors that could cover the shelves in my dining room? Otherwise I can get a few baskets. However the dining room isn’t really the area a I’m looking to declutter as much as my husband’s office and my kitchen area.

For the baskets in my kitchen area, I’m thinking of getting additional baskets and using those to hide the protein powders. Maybe I’ll get a wheeled kitchen cart to put next to the recycle bins to move the cereals and stuff currently occupying the baskets so I can hide the protein powders instead.

I am not using the spice rack! I do like it and don’t want to get rid of it. So I think I’ll store it away for now as well as get rid of the spices as I haven’t used some in over 5 years!

That wall outlet is too high. Have an electrician move it down much lower. Then you won't see all of the cords.

What about putting a shelf or two on that back wall in his office. You can then put baskets on it and he can put his personal items in the baskets.

I start reoganizing with clearing out everything in a space . Then only put bavk what is neccessary to start. All I see in your spaces is clutter . Do you not have a dryer and washer in the unit? Hubby should be drying his swin gear outside or in a dryer not ever in my LR. Mold is always an issue with wet anything. I do not know how hanging wet stuff in the LR is one bit better than in the bathroom with the window open You need storage and lots of it there is clutter everyhwere that needs a home I never like tables set it makes no sense until you are ready to eat. A nice tble runner yes plates no.Shopping carts in the car take out when needed , A huge decuttering is a must . Where you hae the console table I would get 2 ot 3 Ikea pantry cabinets and use those for all that clutter. Might not be a pretty but sure better for storage. They need to be attached to the wall so when you move you rither can leave them behind or be prepared for patching the wall but IMO woth every dime.

organizing will not solve any issues.

your habits will always overshadow the organization, that said. I would prioritize.

The desk, I assume is a work desk. utilize the wall space and get a corner desk and create a visual backdrop for zoom calls. Wall hung charging stations are available everywhere, whatever your requirements. Also the towel hanging could be neater with a unit like this

since it is you that needs this improvement, set the example and sacrifice a couple of your pieces... like the ladder shelf with the photos, I would get rid of it and hang all the photos on the wall. eliminate as much visual clutter. really, you won't miss it.

the peace & calm in the home/apt. is more important. Live the life you have now. one day you may have room for the fussier decor. Have you considered swapping the dining table and your husbands office space. Kitchen and dining together makes more sense, to me.
