Another hiatus.

Good morning all!

I just thought I would check in with some life update. My sewing machine has been quiet of late.

I have about twelve chemo quilts ready for the Save the Children Bazaar coming up shortly, and that is more than usually get taken , so one reason for slowing down.

I have several patterns calling to me so I will get back to them soon. And there is another grandchild’s wedding in the spring so that means a new quilt. I will have to ask for colours first.

The second reason for the slowdown is that DH and I are in the process of redoing our wills. In most cases that wouldn’t be too difficult but since all of our children are out of town and for two out of country, and no one is really available to act as executor, we felt it best to hand things over to the trust section of the bank. So between meetings there, and walking around the house, deciding ‘who gets what’ and making lists etc., emptying drawers of things that haven’t seen the light of day in ages, clearing closets etc., I have not been in a sewing frame of mind.

This does not mean that ’the end is near’ for either of us, but some family deaths lately are sharp reminders that affairs need to be in some sort of order and since, according to my children, I like to be organized, that is what is first on the agenda. And I don’t want them to have to do all this clearing out of ’stuff’.

Sorry if I am being a Debbie Downer , but I do miss interacting with you all and wanted to let you know Where I am and what I am doing.

I will be sewing soon, I promise. And I do log on to see what beauties are being created.

Theresa.

Theresa, thanks for the update! I am on hiatus, too. We are building a house and anticipate moving March, so I am starting to go through things, too.

I think about Char, who had to do all this purging before her move to the boat.

It isn’t the most fun we could have, is it?

We've had that discussion about our wills but haven't done them yet. We really should.

I agree with Lois, planning is not being a "downer". It helps your family, but it also helps you.

I think a lot of people consider their demise a "downer". I have a good friend who is 83, has COPD, b-cell carcinoma, a heart valve replacement, a pacemaker and something else. His will is 40 years old, all of the heirs have passed, he has one sister who is still alive and she is not well. He has no children, divorced 40 years ago and has not remarried. His sister has power of attorney, but that doesn't count after someone dies. He's close to a hoarder. He has 2 vehicles, a house filled will dubiously valuable antiques, 2 garages full of tools, bank accounts, etc. I can only imagine what a mess that will be when he passes.

One of my neighbors died after a very short illness. Her only son had predeceased her. She had no will. She had intended to give her house to her niece, but didn't do any paperwork. Her niece couldn't afford the lawyers and court fees to get the house into her name, so she just took what she wanted out of the house and left it. The house became a blight on the neighborhood. After several years, the county sold it at auction.

I'm not sure I have a "forever" will (by that, I mean I may change my will if circumstances change), but I have given my sister all legal power to take care of my belongs, my funeral, etc. It's only fair to the people you leave behind and your family, whether it's a "downer" for you or not.

After all, you could get killed crossing the street, even if you are only 40.

(I guess I can get off my soapbox now.)

    Theresa,

You are definitely not a downer! Pro-active!!!

My mother-in-law died last Saturday (October 14) and she would have been 98 next week so we are having her clebration of life on her birthday. In the meantime, it's the stuff like obituaries, video tributes, programs, catering that all have to be taken care of! Fortunately, paperwork is in order, but stuff ... stuff. My sister-in-law has been living with her the last 1-1/2 years taking care of her and said she would like to stay in the house through the winter (in Arizona) rather than return to Missouri. We don't care and fortunately, it won't cause any financial burdens, so we'll deal with selling the house next year. Hopefully, we'll have some time to sort stuff.

DH and I do have our paperwork in order, but we have stuff, stuff, and more stuff. DH laughs and says it will all be our son's some day!

You have to keep a good sense of humor or it can really get to you!
