You're going to want to have it cleaned I'm assuming, so factor that into your decision.

I'm not sure that rug will work with a green couch. If your couch was blue, or beige or something, I think the two rugs would work well together. I like trad and modern mixes in rugs.

Depends on your style goals. I don't see that rug with a forest green sofa. Your style, from what I am seeing so far, leans toward more minimal.

Also, keep in mind......that rug is very busy.....so every design picked going forward will have to work around it.

I have two olive green velvet sofas with an Oriental rug in mainly blues and reds. Before I bought The Olives, I searched for inspiration photos for months, on Google and Instagram. I found so many photos of rooms with green sofas and (primarily) blue rugs. I won’t spam the thread with them, but I think blues and greens can look great together.

I was going from always having neutral sofas, so was a bit anxious. :D

Do you have a picture or link of the sofa you’re getting? If you love the rug in person, and don’t want to lose the chance of getting it, but find you don’t like it with the new sofa … could you resell it? Or use it in another room? I’ve had very good luck selling rugs on FB, always within hours of listing them.

I could resell it, or put it in my bedroom, but I guess I want it to be seen by people who come here more :)

I do have a more minimal style because of my lifestyle in general, but I do really like an unexpected thing here and there, and while I dislike clutter I do like a more lived-in and organic? look.

I can't decide if this is yet another piece that I absolutely love, just not in my home, or if I should go for it, since I pretty much have no pattern in anything else, and very few actual colors (not counting the white, dark grey and wood tones)

Oh, I love the idea of a Mario Bellini sofa with an Oriental rug! (Whether that one or another.)

I feel like people either love or hate it, but to me a Bellini would go with almost anything :) and even though it is (was?) quite trendy, I waited over a year to be sure I would still love it before actually committing to it, since it is a big and important piece of furniture :)

Love the rug with your living room furniture. Does it go with the dining room rug? Don't really think so but it isn't horrible. Could you use your current living room rug in your dining room instead as I think it will go well with the FB rug? How far apart are these two spaces? Can you show a zoomed out pic of the room that includes both zones?

Beverly, you do realize that sofa is dark gray and the OP isn’t keeping it? If so, why do a bunch of rug mock-ups with it? It’s nothing like the color her new couch will be.

I can’t see that rug working with a green sofa, but having said that I have apple green chairs sitting on an oriental that looks good. However, if I didn’t already own the rug I would have picked something different.

Well if I had inspiration photos I wouldn't really be asking the question... I get inspired by a lot of designers/content creators on instagram and youtube, but I can't say I want my home to look the same as what they do.

I mostly get inspiration from pieces I like, and I have a combination of styles that I gravitate towards, MCM, post-modern, organic modern, but mostly minimal and contemporary with a touch of retro/vintage for good measure.

And yes, the current sofa that is pictured is not the new one I'm getting, the one in the picture is dark grey and is getting replaced by a dark green velvet one

Hi. Thanks for that description. It helps a lot. 😀 Here is why I ask about inspiration photos.

1) The most important and critical steps in design are inspiration photos (defining what you want the room to look like) and floor plan. If you jump on most Houzz discussions, these critical steps are missed. This is one reason a designs fails.

2) I have never had a client who chose one photo and said, "that's exactly what I want my room to look like. Can you copy and past that and create my room?" However, a combination of photos, (as you mentioned), with specific features pointed out ("I love that rug") ("I like the casual feel of this space"), etc, is a great help in understanding where the client wants to end up. I spend a great deal of time with a client on this topic (even after a questionnaire they complete) to arrive at the right sense they want for the space.

3) How the space looks today is not necessarily (actually often not) where the person wants to end up.

There are a ton of posts on here where folks will jump in and give suggestions, not knowing or understanding where the poster wants to be.....or the poster uses terms that don't adequately explain the goal, like "updated", and people jump in with ideas. "Updated" is better than no information, but still falls very short of defining what the person wants.

Your goals for the room, being even more nuanced than most (I admire your unique style) .....are even more important to define. (Although, you'll never be able to adequately define them in words.....I get that. )

Here are some photos, based upon your input so far, that I think MIGHT have SOME features you like. But, I could be off.

My concern with the rug, based on what you have said so far, is that the space will feel dark, and become more toward maximalist than you want. Large dark Bellini sofa. Yes, green can be a neutral, but as you know, these are large, statement pieces, so won't feel so neutral. Then large dark rug. Again, based on what I am reading so far.

I recommend a rug with a lighter-toned background. This rug is mostly dark.

Lighter sofa stands out against a dark rug and vice versa. Room still feels bright.

So, of all the pictures you posted, I actually do like the second one the best. Here's my thing, I do like a bit of eclectic and warmth, but I don't wanna go boho. The reason I actually liked this rug, and why I like the persian rugs in general (apart from the obvious :D) is that I have a very neutral and minimal space, with zero pattern in in, and a lot of white vertical space.

My goals for the room would be, to the best of my ability to define them with words : airy, clean, uncluttered, contemporary, nothing ornate in terms of shapes, but with a touch of retro, vintage, that one "twist", and ultimately lived-in and not "too precious" like a lot of organic modern/minimal spaces tend to look.

Generally, I'm very inspired by people like Jake Arnold and Anthology studio, and also creators such as Dennis von Nazareth or Marco Zamora on instagram, although like I said, it's one thing to love a space for somebody else, and another to want to replicate it for yourself

I'm not seeing that rug as a good match for a Mario Bellini forest green sofa (I'm assuming modular?) unless you were thinking of bringing loads of blue into the room to go for an interesting pop clash -- and it kind of looks like you prefer a low key near minimalist organic style. The sofa won't be low-key, but the shape makes an organic statement, which should go very well with your other furniture. Worried the rug will look like something you already had and decided to make do with it.

That's why putting your ideal room into words falls short. You need photos. But even going with just your description,

With your description, the rug + the sofa, to me will not work for you.

Is the rug too big for the dining area? I think it would look good under your table.
Then you can do something lighter to go with the forest green rug, similar to what is in your dining area now.

Is this a cheaply manufactured rug or is it hand tufted/knotted wool? Don't just go by pattern and color, if you love it, make sure it's good quality - it will last forever and be so cozy. Cheap rugs start out nice and end up looking cheap after a while...could be why it's on FBM.

As far as cleaning it...assuming it's wool, Woolite in the bathtub. I once found a vintage real Persian someone tossed and so dirty...it came out so beautiful.

I like every one of the vintage-y touches of green rugs that Beverly posted and think they would work nicely in your space and have an organic feel.

Generally speaking both rugs seem in-appropriate to me....as they seem too thin for traffic area like you are showing.. thicker wool tufted will not move or wrinkle… when walked on …or when chairs are moved into and away from table during use while dining…also under table rugs work better if they are big enough to pull out chairs while chairs remain on the rug… thicker wool tufted rugs easily spot clean with a spray on cleaner … and are reasonably priced for a use such as this…
