Please weigh in and let me know if the cornice returns should be included or not.

That seems like a silly question.

Your architect has failed to capture the essence of your inspiration home. It appears as a poor copy.

As for the returns, who are we to say if they should be there? The inspiration house does not have them, so why are they there? What do you think -- it's your house.

If you're trying to emulate the first pic, then obviously you should do away with the returns. You'll save money too.

Sorry but why would you add them if the inspiration is what you want? I ahve no idea what it is you love about the inspiration but if that is what you want then get it not something else .

I like the look of the cornice. I just think it looks like a place where leaves and whatnot will gather and if not cleaned out rot your house eventually.

Hubby loves the look. I hate them. Therein lies the problem. Plus the house directly across the street from ours has the brick "shoulders" like the inspo photo. The design review committee wants variety throughout the neighborhood and may not even allow a home that's too similar to the existing one. I believe that's why the architect veered from the original photo.

You'll have some lovely birds nesting there.

I much prefer the house without them but I'm of the mind that simpler, in this case, is more elegant.

The returns emphasize a horizontal line across the front of the house, which, IMO, detracts from the facade. I'm not a big fan of eyebrow dormers, but that's me. I'd put it on the right, where there's more room.
