I like that Thurlo pendant! The large is 32 and the medium is 24. I was aiming for around 28 diameter. Is it better to go with the larger?

Following. Very glad no one was hurt and there wasn't more damage. If you don't use the room, I would keep the oval table. Flo is right--more spacious. I'm partial to some version of a drum shade, with something that shields naked light bulbs.

I really like the red modern art by the buffet! A contemporary fixture like the bubbles or bowl might be fun!

You might think about repurposing like Flo and others suggested, even with the existing furniture. Lots of articles on Houzz:

And it has 9 bulbs - while I like the one above, it only has 4 blubs so I'm not sure if it will throw enough light.

I like it! Agree that 4 bulbs may not be enough - 9 bulbs on a dimmer gives you lots of flexibility

It is 30” wide and 17” high so technically it can work. But it is a large block of color so sometimes that overpowers a room. Pretty much up to you. I prefer this more timeless look at about the same price.

If you need more light i don't recommend the Brioche (sorry Flo i love it its one of my favorites) but the light shines upward and it does not give off a lot of light. its lovely though!

I realize that but they don’t use the room and want something pretty to look at from living room and be able to use later after major reno. I would go cheaper because of longer term plans. Save money for major reno. I suspect the insurance battles are driving some decisions.

I am just basing the comment off of her saying the other one only has 4 bulbs and she needs more light and preferreed the 6 bulb. Functionality vs style. Since i have specced the Brioche several times i know it is not functional if more light is needed and you wouldnt know that just by looking at it.. As i said in my earlier comment, i agree in not spending a lot on the light if a reno is in the future.

Thank you both. While we don't often use the dining room - we do use it on occasion. So we do need for the chandelier to throw a lot of light - it's the main source of light in the room (we don't have additional recessed lighting in there currently).

A reno is in the future - but not likely the very near future.

I'm open to other ideas.

I'm not concerned by the mass of a chandelier - in fact I seem to be having a visceral reaction to the many anemic (skinny armed) light fixtures popular right now. I really don't like them.

Our dining room is a really good size at 14x13, and with our current furniture is not a crowded or full room at all. I may be drawn to a chandelier with more presence because of this.

Ok sure. It is a very nice room. Do you have a sideboard or console in the dining room? Adding a couple lamps would be nice especially in the evening. I will keep looking. I think a white drum would give you more light than the gold one and there are many choices out there. Bbl

This might work really well. Light and bright and has I dependant down light. I have used Perigold site many times and always been very happy. Just got a wonderful small side table for our living room. Superior quality and great sale price.

Ok - after thinking through the advice, You're right. I've moved away from the solid gold tone chandelier I posted below. I like the shape of it, but agree it's too large/solid.

Do you think the beaded urn shaped chandeliers are too trendy and will be out soon? I like that the urn shape is more formal, but the materials are not. I don't like the urn shapes with just metal or the very formal ones with crystals.

I also seem to be drawn to the tiered shape or the shape that's narrow at the top, widens and is narrow at the bottom.

I'd like to stick to something warm toned and that will give off sufficient light (6+ bulbs).

I hate that I can't seem to settle in on something that I can be excited about. Ugh. :(

the style you are referring to is not dated, however your challend is size. with an 8' ceiling you cant afford the height on most of these. With an 8' ceiling your chandelier height should be around 20". The beaded one you shared above is 30.5" which is just too tall for your ceiling height. If you get to the right height your often diminishing the width you need for your room size and table size. This is going to be your biggest challenge.

This height issue is why a drum chandelier is a good choice. They come in wider sizes but not too high. Since this will be over a table you have a bit more leeway if you find one you love especially with 42” wide table.

I still haven't found something I like. They crew put the new roof on our house yesterday and did the structural repairs. They come back on Monday to give us a new dining room ceiling, drywall repair and repaint in there.

If I go with a drum chandelier it has to be extremely different than the one that is a handful of feet away in my foyer.

I'm sort of leaning toward something linear instead. I don't know.

This is very nice and you can customize to your space. Very pretty but not too formal. Rejuvenation website. A linear shape doesn’t suit your table size.

I'm looking at rugs for this room now too.

Starting my saying I am NOT a decorator so my comment is worth what you;re paying me....... I really like the rug, but seeing it in the mock up in the room, it seems a little "weak" to me against the wall color. and the bold curtains which I also really like.

I uderstand and I'm not sure about it either. The two rugs were suggested to be my a One Kings Lane designer (free design services they provide) . The complication is that the dining room is adjacten to the living room with a very bold oriental rug - which will be just 6 feet away in parallel.

So I'm struggling to find something that works in the dining room and that doesn't have so much pattern that it looks crazy beside the living room rug (see living room rug pattern)

Beautiful rug and just do a dark blue background rug and that will coordinate with this living room rug beautifully.

Some ideas.

So lean in on the blue then? What if I didn't want to go as traditional/oriental in there? Could I do a Navy with a small pattern?

The last one might work but it is too modern to my eye to seamlessly and cohesively work.

That's interesting. I'm trying to learn how this works. Is it the diamond shape? The rug is tan and charcoal so I wouldn't have considered it.

I previously chose a herringbone jute rug in this room (the gold one below) before it was ruined by the tree coming through the ceiling.

Wasn't sure if I should go in the same direction again. If I did I'd like to go more tan than gold ( to coordinate better with the living room). I liked this one bc it was soft on the feet which most are not.

I love that jute rug with the wave pattern. I also love your living room rug. Sea grass is also fairly comfortable underfoot, and really do you walk barefoot while entertaining in the dining room LOL.

I think you can find another oriental-patterned rug that would work with the living room. Mixing them has been done for a long time and looks just fine. Since your LR rug is mostly red with accents of blue, maybe you can find one that is mostly blue/green/tan with accents of red for the dining room. I think going all blue or blue and white is kind of boring and doesn't relate to the LR.
