Didn't they give you a handout on general rules or explain what could be done for your particular property? They are usually very helpful in that regard. Give them a call and ask questions.

We basically have a bare dirt yard all the way around our house and have the weeds mowed down and cleared when they die back in early summer.

No bushes around the house, no trees overhanging the house, no leaf debris in the gutters, no piles of logs of needles. We have burn piles on allowable burn days. 4'x4' is the maximum size pile that does not need a permit.

Yes, they do this for every property in a Fire Risk Zone. These Zones have been greatly expanded recently to include new areas that were never addressed before. That this is new to you is not surprising.

CalFire will come out to your property and explain what needs to be done if you call them. I don't know why they didn't do that on their first visit. Did you ask them anything? I suppose you were stunned speechless.

You might need California Fair Plan for fire insurance. We have it. They cannot cancel your policy as long as you pay your premiums.
